Alan Shields (1944-2005) III The three-dimensional lattice of interwoven paper sculpture is from the Tepee or Grid series and decorated in block printed, hand-colored, and metallic glitter elements, housed in the artist's original custom acrylic plexiglass vitrine case. The work is signed in pencil and numbered 1 of 18. Alan Shields was raised on a farm in Kansas where he learned sewing and needlework from his mother and sisters. He studied art and theater at Kansas State University from 1963 until 1966 when, on the advice of his art professor John O'Shea, he left university before graduating to pursue his career as an artist. Originally studying civil engineering, he shifted his focus to studio art. His interest in Buckminster Fuller's geodesic domes inspired him to break away from traditional flat wall paintings, leading him to create colorful, three-dimensional, and often free-hanging constructions. Alan Shields (1944-2005) was an acclaimed American visual artist who briefly attended Kansas State University from 1963 to 1966. Originally studying civil engineering, he shifted his focus to studio art. His interest in Buckminster Fuller's geodesic domes inspired him to break away from traditional flat wall paintings, leading him to create colorful, three-dimensional, and often free-hanging constructions. Lot: 402 - ALEXANDER CORAZZO (1908-1971) OIL ON ARTIST'S BOARD

Alexander Corazzo (Illinois, 1908-1971) Untitled (A Cubist Influence Abstraction) Mid 20th Century The striking composition employing hard edge color fields and abstracted avian forms bright reds and yellows along with deep warm tones is signed lower right. The overlapping shapes each displays its own interesting texture, giving the shapes a vibrating quality that completes the effectiveness of the composition. Alexander Corazzo was a French-born artist who emigrated to America in 1927 for study at the Saint Paul School of Art in Minnesota. He later studied with Laszlo Moholy-Nagy New Bauhaus in Chicago. In 1935, as an early abstractionist, he was invited by his peers to join Le Groupe Abstraction Creation of Paris. This association of artists devoted to abstract painting and sculpture included Pablo Picasso, Albert Gleizes, Wassily Kandinsky, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and Marcel Duchamp. He was also a member of the American Abstract Artists group founded in 1936 in New York City, and was employed by the WPA around this same time. In 1940 he was put in charge of the Modern Art Exhibits at the Minnesota State fair while his own work was represented by Stendahl Galleries of Los Angeles. During World War II he applied his skills as an artist to do camouflage work, creating deceptive models of trucks, jeeps, tanks and planes out of scrap lumber and burlap that, when finished, would look like real formations from 10,000 feet. At the same time, he was creating abstract paintings that were exhibited at Guggenheim Art Rooms of the Century Gallery in New York and at the Americana exhibit in San Francisco where he won first prize in 1941, securing a $300 purchase award. His works were also exhibited at the National Gallery of Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art and Whitney Museum. A retrospective exhibition was held at the University of Michigan Museum Museum of Art in 1976. Board measures 11 x 9.5 with a framed size of 17 x 15 inches. Bosco Sodi (Mexican Born 1970) Untitled 2005 The large scale canvas built up with layers of raw pigment and natural binders in high relief is signed and dated verso. Bocso Sodi's unique works occupy a space somewhere between painting and sculpture. Through a complicated 24-plus hour process he introduces the basic color and composition to the canvas and the final work of art is completed over long periods of time, up to 3 months in some cases, by gravity, drying and chance, similar to geological formation and erosion, natural forces that the artist feels should take precedence over imposed control. Richard Gillespie (1935-2021) Untitled Late 20th Century The contemporary sculpture incorporating found objects is signed in white enamel near the top of one side rail. Richard Gillespie was an American sculptor and Professor Emeritus of Sculpture at the University of Kansas, where he taught for nearly three decades. While Richard is best known for his monumental steel sculptures (see lot 414 this sale), he produced a number of works like the present lot; parodies of everyday objects transformed with an acerbic wit into surreal sculptures with something to say; objects that exist in the shadow of Duchamp's readymades or Meret Oppenheim's fur-lined cup. Raised in Kansas City, Kansas, Richard grew up around and worked his first jobs in the industrial workshops of his Strawberry Hill neighborhood, In a 1978 interview, wearing his trademark vest, straw hat, faded denims and a bandana at the neck, he related, ' I always had an appreciation for tools and equipment. I was raised around and worked in machine shops, and in foundries. It's only logical that I do my work in these terms.' The terms he refers to are the tools, steel, rivets and welds that were his palette, brush and canvas. Richard was a blue-collar artist, and when he wasn't building his art from the ground up, he was expressing himself through everyday objects like the present lot. Measures 45.5 x 21 x 33 inches. Malkhaz Dekanoidze is a Georgian artist best known for his scenes of fantasy and surrealism. He trained at the State Art Academy of Tbilisi, where he earned a degree in Decorative Arts in 1978. From 1980 to 1987, he worked as an art director at Kartuli Pilmi, the national film studio, contributing set and production designs to numerous Georgian films. In addition to his cinematic work, Malkhaz has pursued an international painting career, exhibiting in cities across Europe, the Middle East, and the United States. His paintings are held in private collections worldwide, and he has completed large-scale public commissions in Georgia, including murals for the Sameba Cathedral in Tbilisi. His practice spans painting, stained glass, ceramics, metal engraving, and inlay work. A lifelong gardener, botanical motifs frequently appear in his compositions. Humberto Calzada (Cuba, Born 1944) La Cortina de Marwol (The Marble Curtain) 1990 The striking, architecturally precise yet dreamlike composition void of human form is signed lower left. The work is signed again, titled and dated on the canvas verso along with an important gallery label from Galeria Arteconsult, one of the most prominent, historic fine art institutions in Central America. Founded in Panama City in 1979 by the art historian and dealer Carmen Aleman Healy, it has served Latin American, Cuban exile, and Caribbean contemporary artists for nearly five decades. Humberto Calzada was a Cuban-American painter known for architecturally precise, surreal compositions inspired by the colonial and neoclassical buildings of Havana. Born in Cuba and exiled to Miami in 1960, he studied industrial engineering and finance at the University of Miami before turning to painting full-time in 1976. Associated with the influential ''Miami Generation'' of Cuban-American artists, Calzada achieved international recognition for his luminous paintings exploring exile, memory, decay, and reconstruction through idealized architectural space. His work was exhibited widely throughout the Americas and is held in major museum collections including the Lowe Art Museum, Bass Museum, St. Louis Art Museum, and Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Chile. Clarence Teed was a Kansas City designer-craftsman, sculptor, and furniture maker associated with the postwar American studio craft movement. As a founding member of the Kansas City Woodworker's Guild and president of the Missouri Craftsman Council, Clarence Teed was a central figure in Midwest studio craft design community. Active during the mid-20th century, Teed became known for blurring the boundaries between fine art, sculpture, and functional design with his furniture forms. In that realm, he considered himself a 'designer-craftsman' who created objects that were both functional as well as artistic. Ron Slowinski (1932-2023) Untitled (Hopi Flower Series) 1973 The unusual example direct from the artist's estate is signed and inscribed verso. Throughout his career, Ronald Slowinski produced several distinct series of works, each series shared a similar narrative through various progressions. This composition from the Hopi Flower series colorfully abstracts and plays on Native American motifs, including Hopi pottery decoration, within a spirited play of architectural motifs. Frank Lloyd Wright was another influence. Ron earned a certificate in painting from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1954 and had his first one person show in 1957 at the famed Wells St. Gallery. This newly established avant-garde exhibition space was founded by, and showcased the works of, some of the city's youngest and most advanced abstractionists of the time. Artists including Robert Natkin and John Chamberlain. Ron considered those post-war years in Chicago, where he worked solely at making art, to be his equivalent of grad school. He would go on to teach at the Kansas City Art Institute for 39 years and participate in more than 60 exhibitions of his work, 25 or more being one person shows. Measures 70 x 46 inches. He was born in Milwaukee and trained at the Layton School of Art as well as the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Working primarily in watercolor and gouache, he produced vividly detailed works that shimmer with color as he depicts symbolic figures, cultural motifs, birds and performers blending the precision of Magic Realism with a flair for the surreal as seen here. Many images fused theatrical elegance with psychological depth and statement. The current owner, an artist herself, relates the following: ' In the fall of 1975, both Ruth and I were exhibiting in the South Orange NJ Annual Downtown Outdoor Art Show which was a very popular destination for artists in the Tri-State area. Taking a break from my own exhibit, we (she and her husband) walked the avenue. That is how and when we met Ruth Kochta; we both fell in love with her work. She was already an established artist and gallery owner in the 70's. Ruth mentioned that she always signed her works on the diagonal to allow the owner to hang her pieces either horizontally or vertically. Hurricane has always hung horizontally for as long as David and I have owned it. Hurricane has hung prominently in our Upper Montclair home since that time. I am sad to part with it; but I am now in the process of downsizing my (our) collection. After graduating high school as valedictorian of her class in 1942, Ruth Kochta pursued her formal art education at Queens College before immersing herself in the epicenter of American modernism: The Art Students League of New York. At the League, she studied under the iconic mid-century masters Rudolf Baranik, Julian Levi, and Bruce Dorfman. Lot: 448 - A LATE 19C CARVING OF 'MRS. DEVIL' ATTR FRANCESCO TOSO

Attributed To Francesco Toso (Italian, Died 1893) Marguerite, wife of Mephistopheles - Mrs. Devil Circa 1880-1890 The Venetian carved wood figure depicts the Mephistophelean character 'Mrs. Devil' (Marguerite), inspired by the German Faust legend. The full-length figure is intricately carved from fruitwood and pine, featuring a variety of devilish masks and motifs in a combination of natural wood tones, ebonized elements, and original painted or stained details intensified by her outstanding glow of patina. She is depicted in classic late Victorian attire, including a high-collared jacket with applied wood buttons, pockets fronted by grotesque masks and laced bodice carved in excellent detail. Apparently original, an exotic brass and nickel necklace is draped below her neck. She wears a fanciful pillbox sort of hat and striped bustle skirt with fringed trim accented by a hip drape wrap with detailed fringe. Her expression is characteristically sardonic, accented by inset glass eyes and a single hoop earring. In her left hand, she holds a slender wand or rod (apparently the original with matching stain, color and patina), while her right hand is upraised, adorned with a brass ring featuring a inset paste stone. The figure stands atop an integrated, carved octagonal lighted pedestal base detailed with repeating geometric and foliate motifs in relief. The delightful vamps of her shoes are carved grinning satyr masks. The Winterthur Museum Library holds a publication that lists Francesco Toso of Venice Italy (the same Toso family famous for Murano glass blowing) as having displayed 'Artwork -- Wood Carvings' at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Various other sources state that Francesco Toso officially exhibited his wood carvings of Marguerite and Mephistopheles at the Exposition, where he passed away during the run of the fair. A similar pair featuring both Mr. and Mrs. Devil (Mephistopheles and Marguerite) formerly owned by the fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli realized more than €180,000 at Christie's in Paris in 2018. Walter Simpson Parke (1909-1994) Untitled (Feeding Birds in Winter) 1940 The depiction of a Midwest farmstead with stylized haycocks beside a red barn and silo is signed and dated lower right. Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, Walter Parke studied at the Chicago Art Institute and the American Academy of Art. He assisted the renowned muralist Ezra Winter (1886-1949) with murals for the library of Congress and the 1939 New York World's Fair before returning to Chicago where his art was accepted in group shows at the Union League Club of Chicago, and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others. At one time, he was president of the Chicago Pallet and Chisel academy. After working with Ezra winter, he spent time in Memphis with his parents. He continued to paint and exhibit, winning first prize at the Brooks Memorial Art Gallery in 1948. Parke was exhibiting in shows in Illinois during the 1940s. By the early 1950s he was back working in Chicago when an article about his commercial illustrations appeared in The Illustrator, Spring, 1951, pages 2-10. After his career in Chicago, he retired to Naperville, Illinois, and his death is noted in the Naperville Sun, April 24, 1994. Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975) The Chute-Buffalo River 1970 The graphite study relates to Benton's later painting The Chute, Buffalo River Above Woolum's Landing from the same year, one of a series of compositions inspired by annual float trips through the Ozarks of southern Missouri and northern Arkansas. Gridded for transfer and with exploratory figure studies, it offers an interesting glimpse into Benton's creative process. The artist's signature is visible through a window in one mat. Additional inscriptions include Crestview 8666 601 North Linden Drive, Beverly Hills Lily Damita. Crestview was a Beverly Hills telephone exchange prefix in the 1930s; 601 North Linden Drive, Beverly Hills was the home address of of Errol Flynn and his French American wife Lily (Lili) Damita from around 1935 to 1942. Another page is inscribed Errol Flynn Warner Bros. and George Rowan Trinity 0131; which can be traced to the Rowan Real Estate and Loan company in downtown Los Angeles. Benton had a significant and long-running relationship with the film industry, beginning in the late 1930s. In an Amon Carter Museum press release from 2015 relates that, ' During his month-long assignment in Hollywood, Benton used hundreds of graphite sketches to create 40 finished ink-and-wash drawings.' leading up the the 1937-1938 mural Hollywood. Similarly, on Feb 4, 1938 the Springfield (Missouri) Leader and Press reported ' THOMAS HART BENTON, who draws pictures, is back in Kansas City after a sojourn to Hollywood to memorialize the film colony in oil for the magazine, Life. According to Springfieldians who visited Mr. Benton the other day, there is more to the job than just painting what he saw. Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, Walter Parke studied at the Chicago Art Institute and the American Academy of Art. He assisted the renowned muralist Ezra Winter (1886-1949) with murals for the library of Congress and the 1939 New York World's Fair before returning to Chicago where his art was accepted in group shows at the Union League Club of Chicago, and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others. At one time, he was president of the Chicago Pallet and Chisel academy. After working with Ezra winter, he spent time in Memphis with his parents. He continued to paint and exhibit, winning first prize at the Brooks Memorial Art Gallery in 1948. Parke was exhibiting in shows in Illinois during the 1940s. By the early 1950s he was back working in Chicago when an article about his commercial illustrations appeared in The Illustrator, Spring, 1951, pages 2-10. After his career in Chicago, he retired to Naperville, Illinois, and his death is noted in the Naperville Sun, April 24, 1994. He had contacts in Nashville, Indiana where the Brown County Art Guild sold his pictures during the late years of his life. Measurements are included in the description. Fred Shane was born in Kansas City and began painting at the age of eight. At age seventeen he was studying at the Kansas City Art Institute. In 1932, he joined the faculty of the University of Missouri in Columbia as an art instructor, ultimately serving as chairman of the art department from 1958 until his retirement in 1971. During World War II, he served as an artist-correspondent with the U.S. Army Medical Corps, producing wartime imagery for newspapers and magazines. He also contributed to the Works Progress Administration, completing the mural Picnic, Lake of the Ozarks for the post office in Eldon, Missouri, in 1941. Printing on the back covering states that this image was used in a Dean Milk Company ' Country Charm' marketing campaign reproduced in the Chicago Tribune in 1941, Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, Walter Parke studied at the Chicago Art Institute and the American Academy of Art. He assisted the renowned muralist Ezra Winter (1886-1949) with murals for the library of Congress and the 1939 New York World's Fair before returning to Chicago where his art was accepted in group shows at the Union League Club of Chicago, and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others. At one time, he was president of the Chicago Pallet and Chisel academy. After working with Ezra winter, he spent time in Memphis with his parents. He continued to paint and exhibit, winning first prize at the Brooks Memorial Art Gallery in 1948. Parke was exhibiting in shows in Illinois during the 1940s. By the early 1950s he was back working in Chicago when an article about his commercial illustrations appeared in The Illustrator, Spring, 1951, pages 2-10. After his career in Chicago, he retired to Naperville, Illinois, and his death is noted in the Naperville Sun, April 24, 1994. Dave McGary (1958-2013) This commanding portrait in rich and historically accurate detail is signed, dated and numbered 38 from an edition of 50 in the casting near the artist's thumbprint impression. With this interpretation of the famous Lakota chief Rain-in-the-Face, McGary utilizes the distinctive qualities and innovative techniques he's best known for and achieves remarkable realism in the textiles, fur, hides and beadwork that adorn his sculpture. And in this case, the sculpture's backside is as striking as its front. The figure stands draped in beaded hide clothing and moccasins with a rifle in a beaded and Native tanned hide scabbard across his back. The rifle stock is decorated in prized brass tacks. A wolf headdress in remarkable detail adds to the commanding presence of the sculpture while summoning the animal's qualities of endurance, intelligence and warrior spirit. The artist includes a hide-covered shield adorned with fully modeled hyper-realistic feathers, likely of spiritual significance as much as protection. Doel Reed (1895-1985) Summer Evening Taos 1953 The etching with aquatint on Rives watermark paper, published in an edition of only 25 prints, is signed by the artist in pencil below the image lower right and numbered 2/25 in pencil lower left. A colored chalk drawing of the same name in the collection of Newfield's, Indianapolis is identically inscribed, '' Summer Evening in Taos.'' The gallery label for this identical composition reads: This is the view from the studio that Reed occupied in 1953 on the second floor of the Harwood Foundation, the artistic center of the art colony in Taos, New Mexico. Reed's preparatory drawings were usually made in colored chalks, even though color was only suggested in the rich gray tones in his finished aquatints. ''For the life of me, I can't see why anyone should sit in a beautiful landscape and do completely non-objective work when the mountains themselves offer no end of abstract pattern.'' - Doel Reed. A handful of museums hold Summer Evening Taos in their collections. But no record of any example appearing at auction could be found. After studying and working in architecture, and prior to serving in World War One, Dole Reed studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy. He returned there to study and teach after the war. Henry Meakin, his instructor there, is primarily credited with introducing Reed to printmaking. After his time in Ohio, Dole Reed took a position as head of the Oklahoma State University art department in 1924. A position he would hold until his retirement in 1959. Following retirement he moved to Taos, New Mexico where he lived until his death in 1985. Over the course of his career, Reed participated in more than 300 juried art exhibitions and was elected to the National Academy of Design for his achievements as a printmaker, specifically the medium of aquatint etching, for which he is considered a master. To this day, OSU's Dole Reed Center in Taos honors his legacy with cultural and educational programs, workshops and residencies that serve the arts community both locally and nationally. It was exhibited at the Northwest Printmakers 20th Annual Exhibition in 1948 and according to an inscription verso, won the gold medal at the International exhibition of color prints at the Cleveland Institute. Today it is held by the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, the Cincinnati Art Museum and the Seattle Art Museum. This marks the first appearance of The Gesture at auction. Emilio Amero was a Mexican-born painter, muralist, printmaker, photographer, filmmaker, and educator. John Steuart Curry (1897-1946) Performing Tiger 1934 The rare lithograph from an edition of only 25 prints is a nice dark impression signed by the artist in pencil below the image lower right, further signed within the stone and image, and inscribed lower left listing the title, date and edition. The back side of the sheet bears the ink stamp of the Curry estate. As a painter of the American Scene in the 1930s, John Steuart Curry was to Kansas what Benton was to Missouri and Grant Wood was to Iowa. Seeking new inspiration, he embedded himself with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus for approximately 10 weeks in early 1932 as it embarked on its spring tour through New England. On this tour, Curry immersed himself in circus life, creating a number of sketches and studies that would serve as the foundation for several significant paintings and lithographs, like the present example. In April of 1933, he had an exhibition of his circus paintings at Ferargil Galleries in New York, coinciding with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus opening their spring season at Madison Square Garden. The Wichita Art Association exhibition label verso lists the edition as 75 but states 10 as the number of available, interestingly. This print is listed as number 48 in Joby Patterson, Norma Bassett Hall: Catalogue Raisonne of the Block Prints and Serigraphs (Petaluma, California: Pomegranate, 2014). The author provides that this image was exhibited at the Twelfth International Print Makers Exhibition, Print Makers Society of California, Los Angeles Museum, Mar.; 1931, Etchings of 1931; and . Arthur W. Hall, Norma B. Hall, Goodspeed's Book Shop, Boston, Oct. Collections: University of Arizona Museum of Art, Tucson. They go on to point out how the towering cloud formations and distant impressions of the desert terrain in Norma Bassett Hall's 1930s Southwest landscapes recall the atmospheric landscapes of her teacher, Ethel Louise Coe. In her painting titled Clouds, Veiled Peak, Taos, Coe treats the big sky of the American Southwest, and the monumental cloud formations of any given day, as the primary and most striking element of the composition. Roderick Mead (1900-1971) Carnival On The Plains 1949 This rarely seen wood engraving, numbered 21 from an edition of 50 prints, is signed by the artist in pencil below the image lower right and titled lower left. Roderick Mead first studied fine arts at Yale University, graduating in 1925, then continued his training in New York under Ashcan School painter George Luks and watercolorist George Pearse Ennis. In 1930s Paris, he studied printmaking at the legendary Atelier 17 under master printmaker Stanley William Hayter. Atelier 17 was one of the great experimental print studios of the modern era and attracted artists such as Joan Miro, Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst and Wassily Kandinsky. Here Mead absorbed Surrealism, abstraction, and experimental printmaking techniques enhancing his command of engraving and wood engraving. After World War II, he returned to the United States and eventually settled in Carlsbad, New Mexico. Mary Marguerite Dill Henry (1913-2011) Orchard Pattern 1941 The rare, low edition lithograph on Warrens Olde Style watermarked paper is numbered 8 from an edition of only 15 prints and signed by the artist in pencil below the image lower right; titled lower left. Best known for her vibrant, mathematically precise geometric abstractions, Mary Henry is recognized as a pioneer of the post-war Op Art and Constructivist movements in the Pacific Northwest. But before the war, she, like many others, worked in a different style. In the late 1930s she was on of the few women to receive a mural commission with the WPA and around the time this print was made she was an art instructor at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. The year of this image, she also studied lithography at the San Francisco School of Fine Arts. The perspective, the light and the treatment of the orchard trees all resemble the work of Grant Wood and the historic Stone City Art Colony in Iowa 25 miles northeast of Cedar Rapids. Doel Reed (1895-1985) Rest 1941 The beautifully textured etching with aquatint, published in an edition of 250 prints, is signed by the artist in pencil lower right. After studying and working in architecture, and prior to serving in World War One, Dole Reed studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy. He returned there to study and teach after the war. Henry Meakin, his instructor there, is primarily credited with introducing Reed to printmaking. After his time in Ohio, Dole Reed took a position as head of the Oklahoma State University art department in 1924. A position he would hold until his retirement in 1959. Following retirement he moved to Taos, New Mexico where he lived until his death in 1985. Over the course of his career, Reed participated in more than 300 juried art exhibitions and was elected to the National Academy of Design for his achievements as a printmaker, specifically the medium of aquatint etching, for which he is considered a master. To this day, OSU's Dole Reed Center in Taos honors his legacy with cultural and educational programs, workshops and residencies that serve the arts community both locally and nationally. Roderick Mead first studied fine arts at Yale University, graduating in 1925, then continued his training in New York under Ashcan School painter George Luks and watercolorist George Pearse Ennis. In 1930s Paris, he studied printmaking at the legendary Atelier 17 under master printmaker Stanley William Hayter. Atelier 17 was one of the great experimental print studios of the modern era and attracted artists such as Joan Miro, Pablo Picasso,Max Ernst and Wassily Kandinsky. Roderick Mead (1900-1971) Untitled (Lighthouse and Buoys) 1944 The drypoint, numbered 2 from an edition of 50 prints, is signed by the artist in pencil below the image lower right. Roderick Mead first studied fine arts at Yale University, graduating in 1925, then continued his training in New York under Ashcan School painter George Luks and watercolorist George Pearse Ennis. In 1930s Paris, he studied printmaking at the legendary Atelier 17 under master printmaker Stanley William Hayter. Atelier 17 was one of the great experimental print studios of the modern era and attracted artists such as Joan Miro, Pablo Picasso,Max Ernst and Wassily Kandinsky. Here Mead absorbed Surrealism, abstraction, and experimental printmaking techniques enhancing his command of engraving and wood engraving.
