Gustave Baumann (1881-1971)

Green Gate Orchard

1923

The fine color woodcut numbered 25 (ink stamp) from the stated edition of 100 prints in three editions, is signed by the artist in pencil below the image lower right and titled lower left. This image was produced in three editions. Classification of this specific example will be posted here shortly. While examples in the second edition of this print are numbered by hand from 100 prints, only a handful of Green Gate Orchard have ever been offered for sale. In her catalogue raisonne I n a Modern Rendering: The Color Woodcuts of Gustave Baumann (Rizzoli Electa), editor Gala Chamberlain writes about how the number of intended prints may have been 100, but editions weren't always fully realized. In discussing a different Baumann image, she states, 'It identifies the print as number 61 out of 100 for this edition. ' 'That was the highest number I found, There could be more but they're so dispersed, or they could have just been destroyed.'' The review of a Baumann exhibition in the Arizona Daily Star, Thursday, February 23, 1928 describes the complexity of Baumann's color woodblock process: ' It is one of the most difficult tasks known to artists to produce color prints. Think of the precision necessary to cut out of blocks (of wood) the various parts of a picture which will take one color only, then to adjust the same piece of paper again and again in the printer that these separate blocks may carry to the . paper just one color. Often, of course, the colors are built up, one over the other, and thereby produce a depth, a tonality, rare to the artist who paints . There are fifteen of these (blocks) to produce just one lovely view of a house guarded kindly by giant trees.'
