Water Hole on the Range

Late 1940s.

The wood engraving, numbered 32 from an edition of 50 prints, is signed by the artist in pencil below the image lower right and titled lower center. A good, dark impression, no record of this print at auction could be found.

Roderick Mead first studied fine arts at Yale University, graduating in 1925, then continued his training in New York under Ashcan School painter George Luks and watercolorist George Pearse Ennis. In 1930s Paris, he studied printmaking at the legendary Atelier 17 under master printmaker Stanley William Hayter. Atelier 17 was one of the great experimental print studios of the modern era and attracted artists such as Joan Miro, Pablo Picasso,Max Ernst and Wassily Kandinsky. Here Mead absorbed Surrealism, abstraction, and experimental printmaking techniques enhancing his command of engraving and wood engraving. After World War II, he returned to the United States and eventually settled in Carlsbad, New Mexico. Hs work is held by the Museum of Modern Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Image measures 8 x 10, sheet is 10.25 x 13, and frame is 14.5 x 19.75 inches.

  • Condition: Good condition, the full untrimmed sheet with deckle edges, not laid down, no damage, punctures, tears or repair. The top margin is covered by a piece of brown paper mounting tape, toning form the mat surrounds the image.

SHIPPING: After verifying that payment has been made and or all funds have cleared, Dirk Soulis Antiques LLC DBA Soulis Auctions will, as a courtesy to the client, undertake the packing and shipping of most purchases. Large items, Furniture, International Shipments and items deemed excessively fragile by Soulis Auctions may require special handling by a third party. Soulis Auctions will coordinate with the buyer's chosen shipper in these instances and will endeavor to provide as much assistance as possible. The cost for shipping handled in-house starts at $16 per box and or the actual cost of wood crate construction, in addition to the cost of insurance and postage or carrier charges. The cost of crates range by size; the majority fall into the range of $50 to $150.

STORAGE AND CARE: All bidders agree that property left at Soulis Auctions storage facilities more than 30 days past the date of sale becomes the complete and total responsibility of the buyer. Soulis Auctions will in no way be responsible for the safety of said property, Soulis will not reimburse for any damage or loss incurred after the free 30 day storage option offered as a gesture to buyer. Any and all property passes from the care, custody and control of Soulis Auctions to seller on day 31.

LOADING AND DELIVERY - Any assistance provided by anyone associated with Soulis Auctions in loading and or delivery is offered as a courtesy and Soulis will in no way be responsible for damage or loss incurred in loading.
