The Gesture

1948

The Trial Proof lithograph is inscribed as such lower left, and signed and dated by the artist in pencil below the image lower right. This enigmatic image is a rare find on the market, but held in numerous museum collections, some in color, some in black-and-white. It was exhibited at the Northwest Printmakers 20th Annual Exhibition in 1948 and according to an inscription verso, won the gold medal at the International exhibition of color prints at the Cleveland Institute. Today it is held by the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, the Cincinnati Art Museum and the Seattle Art Museum. This marks the first appearance of The Gesture at auction. No record of this striking image having ever appeared at auction could be found searching auction record databases going back 30-plus years.
