Charles Banks Wilson (1918-2013)

Small Operator

1952

The lithograph published in an edition of only 40 prints is signed by the artist in pencil below the image lower right and titled lower left, Hunt catalog raisonne number 41. Unframed.

Charles Banks Wilson produced other works that played on themes of deserted mines. Great investments of effort and capitol pictured in a derelict state of abandon, metaphors for optimism and abandonment. Wilson plays on this with the empty foundation on the right foreground with its empty anchor bolts. Meanwhile a small operator pans for gold in the ruins.

CBW's comments in the catalog raisonne read: ''The man separated the metal from the rock by hammering it into small pieces and then shaking it all in his hand jig. The heavier metal sank to the bottom, leaving the waste rock to be scraped off and discarded. This work was carried out amid old concrete mill foundations and forsaken ore bins.''
