Leo Leander Courtney (1890-1940)

Shadows

Circa 1920

Never-before-seen at auction, this woodblock print from an unknown edition printed on Arches watermark paper is signed by the artist in pencil lower right and titled lower left. The Denver Art Museum maintains an image from this edition in their collection. No other record can be found in institutional collections, dealer inventories past or present, or auction record databases going back 30-plus years. Leo Courtney was a Kansas printmaker, commercial artist, woodcarver, and founding member of the Prairie Print Makers. In 1925 he traveled to Taos, New Mexico, with fellow printmaker C. A. Seward, an experience that broadened his subject matter and inspired some of his most sought-after Southwestern images, like the present example. Beyond printmaking, he was also known as an accomplished woodcarver and metalworker.
