Birger Sandzen (Kansas, 1871-1954)

The Great Pike's Peak

1923

The dramatic Middle Period work on canvas is signed lower right front and inscribed The Great Peak/Pikes Peak, Colo XII Verso on the stretcher bars (VII represents the Pelham Greenough's Sandzen Gallery storage code).

This painting is listed as Sandzen card catalogue #747 in the section for year 1923. An inscription of Not for Sale and A.S. (Alfreda Sandzen) on a stretcher bar is consistent with documentation in the Sandzen Gallery archives confirming that this painting remained in the Sandzen-Greenough family collection and was later stored at the Sandzen Gallery in Lindsborg for some time. No record of sale by Alfreda's daughter Margaret Sandzen Greenough (1909-1993) exists, but she was known for consigning oils through American Legacy Gallery in Kansas City.

Works from Birger Sandzen's Middle Period are, .'' often considered the most dynamic and important of Sandzen's career.' (Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery). Colorado scenes, especially major identified landmarks like the present example, are especially desirable.
