Everett Shinn (1876-1953)

Untitled (Clown Theatre)

1948

The atmospheric work of theatrical mood in warm color tones and ghostly whites is signed and dated lower left. Everett Shinn was considered a member of the Ashcan School of American Art. As such, he focused on urban scenes, circus performers, dancers, cafes and gas-lit New York streets while his contemporaries and fellow members depicted grittier realities of the period. This work from his later period touches on those early themes.
