The American Scene work in Shane's expressive manner is signed and dated lower right. The composition, with its heightened colors and geometric array of crosses, corners, squares, pitches, rectangles and roof lines draw the eye t the human figures, bring a dynamic to an everyday scene.

Fred Shane was born in Kansas City and began painting at the age of eight. At age seventeen he was studying at the Kansas City Art Institute. He later refined his technique under Randall Davey at the Broadmoor Art Academy in Colorado Springs, followed by studies in Paris and New York. In 1932, he joined the faculty of the University of Missouri in Columbia as an art instructor, ultimately serving as chairman of the art department from 1958 until his retirement in 1971.

During World War II, he served as an artist-correspondent with the U.S. Army Medical Corps, producing wartime imagery for newspapers and magazines. He also contributed to the Works Progress Administration, completing the mural Picnic, Lake of the Ozarks for the post office in Eldon, Missouri, in 1941.


Shane's work has been exhibited at major institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C., and at the New York World's Fair. His paintings are held in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Canvas measures 18 x 24 with a framed size of 23.75 x 29.75 inches.

SHIPPING: After verifying that payment has been made and or all funds have cleared, Dirk Soulis Antiques LLC DBA Soulis Auctions will, as a courtesy to the client, undertake the packing and shipping of most purchases. Large items, Furniture, International Shipments and items deemed excessively fragile by Soulis Auctions may require special handling by a third party. Soulis Auctions will coordinate with the buyer's chosen shipper in these instances and will endeavor to provide as much assistance as possible. The cost for shipping handled in-house starts at $16 per box and or the actual cost of wood crate construction, in addition to the cost of insurance and postage or carrier charges. The cost of crates range by size; the majority fall into the range of $50 to $150.

STORAGE AND CARE: All bidders agree that property left at Soulis Auctions storage facilities more than 30 days past the date of sale becomes the complete and total responsibility of the buyer. Soulis Auctions will in no way be responsible for the safety of said property, Soulis will not reimburse for any damage or loss incurred after the free 30 day storage option offered as a gesture to buyer. Any and all property passes from the care, custody and control of Soulis Auctions to seller on day 31.
