A fine French Napoleon III ebonized cave à liqueur or tantalus, mid 19th century, the rectangular case decorated throughout with brass line inlay, boulle-style marquetry panels, gilt-metal mounts, beaded trim, foliate corner feet, and a shaped apron base. The hinged lid and front open to reveal a fitted removable interior with four square glass decanters and a suite of gilt-decorated cordial glasses, each decorated with gilt starbursts and gilt borders. The exterior features elaborate polychrome tortoiseshell-style and brass inlaid cartouches on the lid and front panel, with conforming smaller decorative reserves along the base. A richly ornamented 19th-century French liquor cabinet with strong decorative presentation and a complete fitted interior. 11 in. H, 13 in. W, 10 in. D.

Pair of ornate Italian or Continental Rococo Revival giltwood mirrors, late 19th to early 20th century, each with rectangular beveled mirror plate within a beaded inner frame and exuberantly pierced giltwood surround. The frames are carved with scrolling acanthus, foliate C-scrolls, floral ornament, and dramatic shell-form cresting, all raised on small pendant feet and finished in warm gilt surface. 45 in. Fine pair of Victorian gilt brass and porcelain banquet/parlor lamps, late 19th century, originally oil-burning and later converted to electricity. Each having a hand-painted porcelain font with floral reserve decoration on a pale pink ground, ornate gilt brass burner and collar with pierced foliate decoration, and elaborate cast gilt brass base with leaf, scroll, and paw-form feet. Fitted with frosted etched glass globe shades and clear glass chimneys.

A fine set of four American Rococo Revival laminated rosewood side chairs, attributed to John Henry Belter, in the desirable “Rosalie Without Grapes” pattern, circa 1850–1860. Each chair features a shaped balloon back with molded serpentine frame, deeply carved floral crest, upholstered back panel, and serpentine upholstered seat over a carved floral seat rail. The frames are finely laminated and carved with graceful cabriole legs, scrolled knees, and brass casters. Upholstered in rich red and gold foliate damask fabric. Dimensions: 40 in. H, 19.5 in. Pair of neoclassical-style mahogany pedestal stands, each with square stepped top above a molded plinth-form capital, the frieze carved with classical drapery swags, flanking fluted panels, and molded rectangular reserves. Each stand rises on a tapered paneled pedestal shaft with arched molded decoration and floral corner accents, set on a stepped square base with dentil-style molding. Lot: 10 - American Federal Double-Arm Argand Lamp with Eagle, c. 1820–1830

An American Federal double-arm Argand table lamp, circa 1820–1830, in gilt and patinated metal, the central standard mounted with a finely cast spread-wing eagle above a fluted column and square plinth base, with two scrolling arms supporting frosted and cut glass shades decorated with floral and foliate motifs. The central standard is fitted with a gilt-metal urn-form cap and hanging crystal prisms, with gilt acanthus and foliate mounts throughout. The likely original etched glass shades are period and especially desirable, each having an unusual brass or gilt-metal lower collar or retaining rim. Converted from oil to electric. 20 in. H, 19 in. Large Continental School oil on canvas after Raphael and workshop’s celebrated Madonna del Divino Amore, also known as The Virgin and Child with the Infant Saint John the Baptist, Saints Elizabeth and Joseph. The painting depicts the seated Virgin in rose and blue drapery with the Christ Child, accompanied by the young St. John the Baptist holding a reed cross, St. Elizabeth behind, and St. Joseph standing in shadow at upper left. Executed in the 19th century in the Grand Tour or academic copy tradition, the work presents a finely rendered devotional subject after one of the great High Renaissance compositions. American Classical mahogany bench, circa 1830–1850, of elegant rectangular form with richly figured mahogany frame, scrolled end supports, rounded bolster-form end rails, molded base, and small brass casters. The bench is fitted with Scalamandré floral upholstery and coordinating pillows and was purchased from Pippen’s Ltd Antiques & Interiors, Natchez, Mississippi, a noted Natchez antiques source. 20 in. Monumental bronze sculpture after Frederic Remington, American, 1861–1909, titled “The Mountain Man,” depicting a frontiersman on horseback descending a steep rocky slope. The rider is modeled in fringed frontier attire with long hair, rifle, saddle accoutrements, and reins in hand, the horse dramatically posed with downward motion across the naturalistic rock base. Finished in a dark patina and mounted on a square plinth base. 50 in. H, 17 in. W, 27 in. D.

A handsome French Empire mahogany cabinet stand, circa 1820–1840, having a rectangular white marble top above a single frieze drawer with richly figured mahogany veneers and original gilt-bronze hardware, including a central wreath-form pull and opposing classical mask mounts. The case is flanked by rounded engaged columns with gilt-bronze collars, above an arched mirrored cabinet door opening to a fitted shelved interior. Lot: 16 - Set of Four Aesthetic Movement Ebonized and Gilt Nesting Tables, Raynal C. Bolling / Greenwich Provenance Material

An exquisite set of four graduated nesting tables, late 19th to early 20th century, in ebonized finish with gilt highlights and finely decorated tops featuring gilt botanical and fern motifs. Each rectangular table is raised on paired turned and fluted supports with gilt-ring accents, joined by shaped stretchers and ending in elaborate gilt paw-form feet with red-painted detail. The tables nest neatly as a graduated set and display a highly decorative Anglo-Japanese or Aesthetic Movement character, with striking contrast between the black ground, gilt ornament, and naturalistic leaf decoration. Accompanied by printed provenance material from the Greenwich Historical Society concerning Col. Raynal C. Bolling, an early American aviation figure and Greenwich resident associated with the Greyledge estate. Dimensions: largest approximately 28 in. H, 21 in. W, 13.5 in. D.

The clock with highly ornate cast case having urn finial, shell crest, pierced scrollwork, floral and foliate decoration, paw feet, and porcelain/enamel dial with Arabic numerals and painted floral garland. Flanked by a matching pair of gilt brass five-light candelabra with urn-form standards, scrolled candle arms, decorated candle cups, and elaborate bases. Comes with winding keys. A fine British Regency rosewood tea poy, circa 1825, the sarcophagus-form tea chest raised on a carved pedestal standard with lotus and foliate carving, above a rounded circular platform and four scrolling feet with brass casters. The hinged rectangular case opens to a fitted interior with two covered tea compartments and two cut glass mixing bowls, the whole retaining a handsome warm rosewood surface with strong figuring and elegant Regency proportions. 31 in. Lot: 25 - American Classical Figured Mahogany Drop-Leaf Work/Sewing Table, Attr. to Isaac Vose, c. 1820–1830

A fine American Classical figured mahogany drop-leaf work or sewing table, Boston, circa 1820–1830, attributed to Isaac Vose or Vose & Son. The rectangular top with rounded drop leaves opens to form an extended work surface, above three graduated drawers with rounded fronts, original-style turned wooden pulls, and individual escutcheons, the whole raised on cylindrical supports and a trestle base with turned stretcher, shaped feet, and brass casters. The lower section retains a demi-lune silk sewing bag, now covered in pale green fabric, suspended beneath the drawer case. The table is distinguished by richly figured mahogany veneers throughout, including mahogany drawer fronts and drawer construction, and closely relates to documented Boston Classical work tables attributed to Vose, particularly examples with drop leaves, multiple drawers, demi-lune sewing bag, cylindrical supports, and brass casters. 28.5 in. Lot: 26 - L Optique Zograscope Optical Viewing Instrument

Rare LOptique Optical Viewing Instrument Zograscope-Type Viewer, with Monticello Correspondence, 19th century or earlier form, wooden optical viewer on turned pedestal stand, having a circular viewing lens/mirror within a square pivoting frame, the frame with fine string inlay and corner inlaid devices, raised on turned supports and a circular molded base. Accompanied by a 1974 letter from James A. Bear, Jr., Curator and Resident Director of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation, noting that the instrument is an optique, used for enlarging small print, and that such instruments were made as early as 1745 and as late as 1871. The letter further states that the present example appears somewhat similar to one at Monticello, while noting differences in post and frame details. Also accompanied by Xerox enclosure titled LOptique, showing the device in use to examine paintings or small images under magnification. Devices of this type relate to the 18th-century tradition of viewing vues d’optique or perspective prints through an optical machine or optique. 23.5 in. H x 10 in. W x 10 in. D.

Lot: 28 - Important Large Continental School Oil on Canvas After Cristofano Allori, Judith with the Head of Holofernes

Important large Continental School oil on canvas, likely 18th century, after Cristofano Allori, depicting Judith with the Head of Holofernes. The dramatic Old Master composition shows Judith richly dressed in golden robes, holding a sword in one hand and the severed head of Holofernes in the other, with her attendant appearing in the background. Housed in a giltwood frame. Accompanied by 2011 Hudson + Salah Art Conservation Studios documentation showing a major conservation campaign, including removal of discolored varnish and old overpaint, cleaning, lining onto pure Belgian linen with BEVA 371 adhesive, restretching onto a new custom stretcher, inpainting, and varnishing. Conservation photographs show that the veiled attendant figure in the upper right was revealed after removal of heavy overpaint. The documentation also includes pre-conservation verso photographs with an indistinct old inscription. Provenance: Ormonde Plantation, Natchez, Mississippi. Lot: 29 - Wedgwood “Pagoda” Partial Dinner Service, 96 Pieces

A large and attractive 96-piece Wedgwood earthenware dinner service in the “Pagoda” pattern, decorated throughout with an Orientalist pavilion landscape medallion surrounded by dense polychrome floral and foliate borders in iron red, blue, ochre, and brown on a cream ground. The service includes a substantial assortment of graduated platters, covered serving dishes, sauce boat with underplate, pedestal compote, dinner plates, luncheon or salad plates, bread plates, cups, saucers, and related table articles. Marked. Largest platter measures 18 in. W x 16 in. D.

Lot: 30 - American Country Sheraton Faux-Grained Sugar Desk, Southern, Early 19th Century

A scarce American country Sheraton sugar desk-form chest, Southern: Kentucky or Tennessee region, early 19th century, retaining an old faux-grained painted surface with yellow ochre line decoration simulating inlay. The rectangular case is fitted with a hinged slant lid opening to a deep storage well, with an upright rear gallery or backboard, iron hinges, and iron hasp/lock fitting, raised on four ring-turned legs with painted banding. The case is constructed with dovetailed side joints and early secondary woods, the interior showing honest oxidation, wear, and use. A highly unusual small-form country painted storage piece with strong visual relationship to Southern sugar desks, sugar tables, and related dry-goods storage furniture. 33.5 in. H, 22.5 in. Pair of Victorian porcelain portrait plaques, each finely painted with a bust-length portrait of a young lady in Renaissance Revival costume, set against textured gilt grounds and housed in ornate gilt oval frames with pierced foliate crests, side ornament, and scrolling lower details. A fine English Regency mahogany cellarette, early to mid-19th century, of sarcophagus form with a hinged pyramidal paneled lid opening to a lead- or zinc-lined fitted interior with divided bottle compartments. The case is finely veneered in figured mahogany with line-inlaid geometric paneling to the lid and sides, molded upper and lower edges, a small raised rectangular lid panel, and a working support stay. Lot: 35 - New Hampshire Federal Mahogany and Mixed-Wood Chest with Gallery, c. 1810–1820

A striking New Hampshire Federal chest of drawers, circa 1810–1820, in mahogany and mixed secondary woods, featuring a beautifully figured two-tone facade with contrasting drawer veneers, four graduated long drawers, and a fitted gallery above with three small drawers beneath a shaped backsplash. The case is framed by dramatic rope-twist and ring-turned front posts, continuing to turned legs, with simpler rear turned legs. The gallery terminates in scrolled ears mounted with brass rosettes, and the chest retains handsome brass pulls and escutcheons that complement the warm mahogany color and bold figured drawer fronts. The lower skirt is shaped with a scalloped apron. 54 in. H, 44 in. W, 20.5 in. D.

Lot: 36 - Clementine Hunter, American/Louisiana, 1886/87–1988, Picking Cotton, 1981

Oil on board, signed, depicting workers gathering cotton in a plantation landscape with figures, birds, cabins, trees, and waterways, rendered in Hunter’s characteristic bold folk-art style. Housed in a simple molded wood frame. Paper label verso identifies the artist as Clementine Hunter, title “Picking Cotton,” medium as oil on board, date 1981, and states “signed.” Accompanied by original 1981 purchase receipt from Gasperi Folk Art Gallery, 831 St. Peter Street, New Orleans, Louisiana, dated May 21, 1981, identifying the work as “C. Hunter, Picking Cotton (1981). Richard Gasperi and Gasperi Folk Art Gallery are well documented in the Clementine Hunter and Southern self-taught art field; the Smithsonian Archives of American Art records Gasperi’s assistance with a 1985 Clementine Hunter documentary, and the American Folk Art Museum archives note that the Richard Gasperi Papers include extensive research files on Clementine Hunter. Lot: 37 - Howard Finster, The Great Cheata, Painted Folk Art Cheetah Cutout, 1986

Howard Finster, American/Georgia, 1916–2001. Paint and marker on cutout board, in the form of a spotted orange cheetah, the front signed and inscribed throughout the feet and body with “The Great Cheata,” “God Bless,” “Works of Art,” “Howard Finster from God,” and “1986.” The reverse is extensively inscribed by the artist, including “5000.595 works of art since 1976,” “over 10-years work,” “night and day for you all out there,” “By Howard Finster,” “Summerville, Ga. 30747,” “God Bless You All,” “Howard Finster,” and dated “Sep. 3, 1986.” A bold and desirable animal-form cutout from Finster’s important 1980s period. 15 in. A fine American Sheraton mixed-wood two-drawer work table or stand, circa 1830, with a rectangular overhanging top above two drawers faced in richly figured bird’s-eye maple or maple veneer, framed by contrasting darker mahogany or mahogany-stained borders. The case is flanked by carved vertical stiles with leafage detail, raised on four turned and spiral-carved legs ending in rounded feet. An American Classical mahogany center or parlor table, circa 1840, having a circular black marble top with bold gold and cream veining, above a deep circular skirt with figured mahogany veneer, applied beaded molding, and four scrolling lyre-form supports with carved acanthus or leaf terminals. The supports rise from a shaped lower platform stretcher with conforming bead molding, ending in boldly scrolled feet fitted with brass casters. A substantial Classical parlor form with strong decorative presence, retaining what appears to be its original black and gold marble top, traditionally described as Egyptian marble. 28.5 in. Stein, 201–203 First National Bank, Muscatine, Iowa. This scarce two-wing cabinet desk opens to form a complete executive and clerical office station, with one side fitted as an executive writing desk and the opposing wing arranged for clerical filing and document storage. The interior is elaborately fitted with a sliding writing surface, green writing panels, pigeonholes, letter slots, document compartments, folio dividers, interior drawers, brass pulls, postal/file boxes, numerous blue-painted metal file drawers, large hinges, locks, keys, and gallery top. Joseph A. Moore’s patented cabinet-desk design was developed in the same Indianapolis office-furniture tradition as Wooton and was intended as a self-contained organizational office, capable of closing while preserving papers and writing materials within. The documented Muscatine, Iowa bank provenance adds considerable interest, with the accompanying envelope tying the desk to S.G. Stein of First National Bank, Muscatine. A monumental German Renaissance Revival open-well tall case clock by Lorenz Furtwängler & Söhne, Furtwangen, Germany, late 19th century, the highly architectural walnut case richly ornamented with applied brass and bronze mounts, figural cresting, scrolled broken-arch pediment, carved columns, pierced panels, mask mounts, floral appliqués, and elaborate classical and foliate ornament throughout. The circular glazed dial door opens to a finely decorated brass and silvered dial with stylized Arabic numerals, engraved minute track, pierced hands, and ornate central boss. The open-well lower section displays the impressive weight-driven movement with brass weights, chain suspension, and a striking sunburst pendulum with cast mask center. The lower cabinet door is centered by a figural medallion with applied metal corner mounts, continuing the rich Renaissance Revival vocabulary of the upper case. The clock has LFS maker’s mark, stamped to the rear/backing plate with number 707, identifying the maker as Lorenz Furtwängler & Söhne. Retains old provenance label for Col. and Mrs. George H. Saylor, Maxwell AFB, Alabama, and fragmentary German paper label to the reverse with partially legible clock-related wording, including what appears to be “Schlagwerk,” referring to the striking mechanism.
