A monumental German Renaissance Revival open-well tall case clock by Lorenz Furtwängler & Söhne, Furtwangen, Germany, late 19th century, the highly architectural walnut case richly ornamented with applied brass and bronze mounts, figural cresting, scrolled broken-arch pediment, carved columns, pierced panels, mask mounts, floral appliqués, and elaborate classical and foliate ornament throughout. The circular glazed dial door opens to a finely decorated brass and silvered dial with stylized Arabic numerals, engraved minute track, pierced hands, and ornate central boss. The open-well lower section displays the impressive weight-driven movement with brass weights, chain suspension, and a striking sunburst pendulum with cast mask center. The lower cabinet door is centered by a figural medallion with applied metal corner mounts, continuing the rich Renaissance Revival vocabulary of the upper case. The clock has LFS maker’s mark, stamped to the rear/backing plate with number 707, identifying the maker as Lorenz Furtwängler & Söhne. Retains old provenance label for Col. and Mrs. George H. Saylor, Maxwell AFB, Alabama, and fragmentary German paper label to the reverse with partially legible clock-related wording, including what appears to be “Schlagwerk,” referring to the striking mechanism. A visually commanding and technically impressive German open-well tall case clock by one of the better Black Forest clockmaking firms of the late 19th century. 93 in. H, 28 in. W, 14 in. D.

  • Condition: Very good and impressive antique condition overall, with expected age shrinkage, minor separations, surface wear, small veneer or carving losses, oxidation and patina to metal mounts, and scattered abrasions consistent with age and use. Complete and reported/observed in working order
