In this pose, one of twenty-nine known images captured by Sarony in 1882 and three in 1883, Wilde wears knee-breeches, silk stockings, and patent leather slippers to "be used in the drawing-room." The bows visible on the slippers were unconventional for the time.

Designer Unknown Vesta Tilley Co. Circa 1900. Lithograph poster Born Matilda Alice Powles in Worcester, England, young Vesta Tilley's father was a musician, emcee, and stage manager. She was best known for her music hall performances depicting men, mostly dandies and fops. Making her stage debut at the age of three, Tilley began singing professionally in men's roles at six. As an adult, Tilley graduated to exclusively male roles. "I felt that I could express myself better if I were dressed as a boy." By the 1890s she was known as the London idol and was the highest paid female performer in the entertainment business. Although Tilley lived the life of a cisgender heterosexual woman, the public spectacle of her performances undoubtedly created a space or at least an inflection point signaling difference and tacit although weak acceptance of queer identity in the Victorian era.

Real Photo postcards, each numbered and captioned in the negative "Le Cake-Walk / Dansé au Nouveau Cirque Les Nègres" with the numbers running from 1-6 and 8-10; most are unused, with minor wear and uneven toning on verso, while two are used with postmarks dated 22 April and 1 July 1903. Jack Brown was an African-American performer born in Petersburg, VA in 1875. He went to France in 1900, and in October 1902 began performing as a female impersonator in "Les Joyeux Nègres" revue at the Nouveau Cirque in Paris, interpreting the distinctly African American cake walk dance with partner Charles Gregory (also seen here in the postcards). A Louis Lumière film of the pair performing in the same outfits (possibly filmed the same day as these photographs were taken) can be found on YouTube; it has been called the first film of a drag performer. Brown continued performing in Europe through at least 1919, making his primary residence in Great Britain.

San Francisco: City Lights Books, September 1958. Sixth printing of the Pocket Poets Series edition, with an introduction by William Carlos Williams. It was part of the library of the Mattachine Society, the leading pre-Stonewall homophile organization, although the circulation card suggests that it was never checked out. The organization splintered and dissolved in the late 1960s, long before Ginsberg signed this copy.

They all appear in the magazine's "The Feminine Viewpoint" section. Includes: "The Anticipation of Eve," pages 21-29 in the June-July 1957 issue; wrapper detached and worn. "The Budget," pages 21-22 in the March 1958 issue; minimal wear. "Renascence," pages 17-21 in the December 1958 issue; minimal wear.

André Baudry, editor. 1922-2018 The first seven years of the French journal Arcadie: Revue Littéraire et Scientifique. 77 monthly issues, #1 through #84 complete (7 of them being double issues), each about 50 to 70 pages including wrappers; minimal wear and minor toning; some unopened. Paris, January 1954 to December 1960 complete. France's pioneering homophile magazine. The first issue begins with a drawing by Jean Cocteau and his three-page message, followed by a short story by novelist Roger Peyrefitte, and the translation of a Walt Whitman poem into French. Editor Baudry faced prosecution and fines on an obscenity charge in 1955 but persevered. Glossy illustration sheets or photographs are laid or tipped into issues #1-18, 22-24, 26, 28-30, 33, 39-47, 49-51, 53, 54, 57, 58, and 77. A mimeographed letter to the subscriber dated July 1954 bears the manuscript signature of editor Baudry. Additional mimeographed newsletters are laid into #11-26, 40-44, 46, 50, 53, 55-58, 74, 75, and 77. #4 and #[16] have their worn original newsstand wrapper bands. 7/8, 19/20, 31/32, 43/44, 55/56, 67/68, and 79/80 were numbered as double issues covering July and August. The first issues of 1955 are numbered #1-4, deuxieme année before reverting to #17. The magazine continued publication through 1982. None others traced at auction

It begins with a typescript of a 21 January 1966 Time Magazine article titled "The Homosexual in America." This is followed by 13 erotic short stories with titles like "Gil's Initiation," "The Glory Hole," and "Salty Shipmates." One additional story, "My Sailor Cousin," is crossed off in the table of contents, and its three pages were removed from the binder.

Octavo, illustrated purple wrappers; minimal wear. [New York: Guild Book Service, 1964]. Unauthorized second edition. The original report was commissioned by the Florida State Legislature to investigate an alleged epidemic of homosexuality, including "infiltration into agencies supported by state funds by practicing homosexuals." The resulting report is filled with moral outrage. Also included are several erotic photographs including full-page shots of bondage and of oral sex being performed in a public restroom. A "Glossary of Homosexual Terms and Deviate Acts" extends to several pages, as does a "Bibliography on Sexual Deviations." The report was released in mid-March 1964. Copies were distributed to all Florida state legislators, and additional copies were available to the public for 25 cents. The Florida attorney general, in shutting down the distribution of the original printing two days after its publication, warned that "It will become the object of curiosity in every school in the state and could engender perversion." This second edition was published in unauthorized facsimile by the Guild Book Service, the newly launched mail-order wing of H. Lynn Womack's Guild Press. The price was $2.00. Womack, who had previously been prosecuted and acquitted for sending pornographic gay material through the mail, was investigated by the Postal Investigation Service for mailing the government report. He boasted of "substantial" sales of the "Purple Pamphlet" thanks in part to the legal case: "The publicity has been very helpful." His marketing brochure emphasized the erotic photography, promising that "this is the most amazing book that we have ever seen come from any public body." Manuscript map of Venice laid in. No place, 1965 Stated sixth edition. Le Guide Gris ("The Gray Guide") was an international travel guide launched by the Mattachine Society in 1958. An earlier edition billed it as "the first ever travel guide written specifically for gay male travelers." The pamphlet is arranged alphabetically by country. The bulk of the entries span Europe, including maps of major cities such as Paris, Berlin, and London. Some entries are devoted to other areas, including Australia, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Thailand, and even some predominantly Muslim nations such as Libya, Morocco, and Malaysia. None of the entries cover the United States or Canada. A few cross-references point to a Latin America section which is not found. Pages 42 and 43 are not found and apparently missing, covering part of Amsterdam. This copy has manuscript notations to the Florence entry, as well as a double-sided manuscript map of Venice laid in. We find holdings of Le Guide Gris in only 4 libraries, and find no editions at auction.

Prominent speakers included Mistress of Ceremonies Joan Fleischmann (under her pseudonym Joan Fraser), Dick Leitsch (who later led the famous Julius "sip-in" protest), and Frank Kameny.

Minneapolis, MN: DSI Sales, 1967 These are 1960s beefcake magazines, but issue #2 is also an important historical document. Directory Services, Inc. (DSI) was a large Minneapolis publishing company which specialized in guidebooks and gay erotica. In February 1967, its officers Lloyd Spinar and Conrad Germain were arrested for distributing pornography, and faced a maximum of 145 years in prison and $145,000 in fines. Unlike other victims of similar prosecutions, they had the means to mount a vigorous defense in court, and the courage to make their opposition public. In July, the federal district court acquitted them of all charges, and proclaimed that "the rights of minorities expressed individually in sexual groups or otherwise must be respected. With increasing research and study, we will in the future come to a better understanding of ourselves, sexual deviants, and others." This decision cleared the way for legal distribution of full frontal male nudity through the mail, which remains the legal standard. In issue two of the DSI magazine Unique, pages 25-28, they boasted of the court case in a long article titled "A Major Victory"--with a male nude on the facing page. The photographs are uncredited, but some have been attributed to photographer Pat Milo and appear in his "American Photography of the Male Nude, 1940-1970," Volume V.

The recent prosecution of the club's mobster co-owner for extortion and larceny is also discussed. In addition to the listings and ads, the guide includes longer pieces on political activism, the "Gay Cruising Scene," the Homosexual Bill of Rights, and "Wave of Killings Shock Homosexual Community." Other annual and quarterly editions of this guide were issued by the Mattachine Book Service, which is uncredited here but actually held the copyright per "The Stonewall Riots: A Documentary History," page 326.

Silver prints (17) This group appears to be a rare insight into the early part of Bruce's career when he was first moving out west. Having been fined by the police for his nude photography, he was fired from his job as a high school chemistry teacher in Nebraska, spurring a permanent move out west. During this time, he traveled the country, finding new models and shooting in scenic landscapes, hotels, and his Los Angeles studio. As he progressed in his career, his style shifted toward studio work, where he later developed his iconic tongue-in-cheek beefcake photography. A number of these models, locations, and images appear in the 2001 book The Naked Heartland: The Itinerant Photography of Bruce of Los Angeles. The book chronicles the early years of Bruce's photographic endeavors through his photographs and first-person accounts.

Directory Services, Inc. (DSI) was a large Minneapolis publishing company which specialized in guidebooks and gay erotica. In 1967, its officers Lloyd Spinar and Conrad Germain won a federal court case which cleared the way for legal distribution of full frontal male nudity through the mail, which remains the legal standard. These issues of Rugged do not address the court case directly, but each features anti-censorship editorials, and each closes with "The Publisher's Creed" which concludes: "Those concerned with freedom have the responsibility of seeing to it that each individual book or publication, whatever its contents, is given the freedom of expression granted to it by the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America."

Signed, dated, and inscribed "AP 1" in pencil, lower margin. This unpublished image is best known through a variation that was reproduced and reissued in 2025 as a lithograph. That image, entitled "Hunting," while similar in color scheme and overall composition, features a different man in the background. In this variation he appears in tumescent repose against a tree, the later printing has him as a leather-clad motorcycle patrol man. One of only a very few linoleum cuts that the artist produced. She combined the photograph with a mandala bearing the words "Let Go," (designed by Suzanne Bevier). The resulting poster in "red-orange and purple on soft gold" was offered for sale through the pages of Come Out! for one dollar (volume 1, issue 7 Dec-Jan 1970, p. 2).

Third World Gay Revolution spun off from the Gay Liberation Front in July 1970, in reaction to both racism in the Gay Power movement and homophobia in the Black Power movement. They remained active as a separate organization for only a few months. One of these holiday cards reads "Celebrate" on the outside, and opens to a lavender image of the word "Gay " in the shape of a hand grenade. Another shows a Christmas tree with "Joy to the World" on the outside. Inside, a trail of gunpowder and weapons leads to the tree, under the header "The Gay Revolution Has Come." The third reprises the grenade surrounded by the repeated text "thirdworldgayrevolution," with "Gay Greetings" on the inside and two intertwined revolutionaries in a yin and yang pattern. With--the centerfold spread of a newspaper [identified as the August 1971 issue of the Houston newspaper "Iconoclast Comes Out," 1:31], with a color "Come Out!" poster with poetry on one side, and the "3rd World Gay Revolution" / "Gay Revolutionary Party Manifesto" on the other. Newsprint, 15 x 22 3/4 in. (38.1 x 57.8 cm.); folds, separations at folds, moderate wear. Newspaper: 15¼x23 inches, 38¾x58½ cm.

San Francisco held a small Gay Liberation March on 27 June 1970 with about 25 participants. The San Francisco Pride parade has been held annually in late June since 1972 under several different names. These flyers are from that first annual parade, here billed as the Christopher St. West Gay Parade. Both feature the same art by Derosa. One has an inset map of the parade route and a list of endorsements. The other explains the event logistics, giving a sense of its small DIY nature. Locals were asked to sign up for hosting out-of-town participants, who were encouraged to bring sleeping bags.

Flyers and handprinted signs relating to the anti-Anita Bryant Florida orange juice boycott. Circa 1977. Anita Bryant was a pop singer, and was most famous as the brand representative for the Florida Citrus Commission. When she launched a side career as an anti-gay activist in 1977, it sparked a national boycott of Florida oranges that lasted three years. This lot relates to a San Francisco-area protest against Bryant circa 1977. Includes: 4 manuscript signs. A list headed "Boycott Supported By" fills two of the signs. Among the more interesting supporters are Jim Jones' People's Temple (a year before the horrific mass Kool-Aid suicide), Harvey Milk, and Castro Camera. The other two signs read simply "Recruiting Station." These are all written on verso of recycled printed posters for a concert by the Black Light Explosion Co. 5 related flyers from the same period: two asking us to "Put the Squeeze on Florida Citrus," and three sharing news stories on the issue.

Two Anita Bryant T-shirts: Anita Sucks Fruits, Sportswear S [34-36] and A Day Without Human Rights is Like a Day Without Sunshine M [38-40]. Anita Bryant was a pop singer, and was most famous as the brand representative for the Florida Citrus Commission. When she launched a side career as an anti-gay activist in 1977, it sparked a national boycott of Florida oranges that lasted three years. Miami banned discrimination against its gay residents in January 1977. The leader of the fight against this ordinance was Anita Bryant (1940-2024), until then best known as a beauty queen, singer, and brand ambassador for the Florida Citrus Commission. She became the head of a coalition called "Save Our Children" which secured the repeal of the gay rights ordinance on 7 June 1977. The Miami Victory Campaign was formed to counter Bryant and Save Our Children, helping to turn the legal struggle for gay rights into a national cause. One of their most effective tactics was a boycott of Florida citrus products which helped derail Bryant's career. The "Day Without Human Rights" shirt is mentioned in the 3 May 1977 issue of the Philadelphia Daily News. T shirts and buttons bore variations on the "Anita Sucks" theme including, "Anita Sucks Citrus," and "Anita Sucks Oranges." "Anita Sucks Fruit," is one of the least commonly seen even though it bares an exquisite double entendre.

Milk ran three times for a position on San Francisco's Board of Supervisors, in 1973, 1975, and 1977, when he won a seat. In 1976, he ran for a seat in the California State Assembly, representing the 16th Assembly District. In a competitive primary, he received 41% of the votes. Milk was already well known as a gay activist and the unofficial "Mayor of Castro Street" by 1976, but this brochure does not mention his sexuality. It presents him as a successful small businessman, an outsider fighting against corruption and machine politics. Listed on his campaign committee is Carol Ruth Silver, who joined him on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors the following year. The brochure is illustrated with 5 photographs of Milk, most of them taken while talking with constituents.

Harvey Milk was killed in 1978. By November 1982, his surviving partner Scott Smith had memorialized him with the Harvey Milk Archives at 3730 17th Street in the Castro District. We see a few news references to a connected Museum of Lesbian & Gay History circa July 1984. This sign describes it as "a project of the Harvey Milk Archives, a non-profit educational organization." The Harvey Milk Archives are now part of the San Francisco Public Library.

This lot consists of 5 flyers opposing the initiative: "Religious Freedom or the Briggs Initiative." "March and Rally to Defeat the Briggs Initiative" in San Francisco on 25 June. "Open Planning Meeting for a Speak-Out against the Briggs Initiative" on 9 November [1977]. Circular letter from "A United Fund to Defeat the Briggs Initiative" signed in facsimile by Sally Gearhart and Harvey Milk, undated. "Gay People: No on Proposition 13: An Unlucky Number from the Same People Who Brought You the Briggs Initiative" on 6 June [1978], naming Harvey Milk. Laura Santos was born in the Philippines, and came to San Francisco circa 1970. She performed as a singer at the famous drag club Finocchio's under the name Florencio de los Santos from about 1974 through 1983. Her photograph appeared in the San Mateo Times of 4 February 1977, which noted that her "beautiful gowns and raven black hair" were "a delight to behold." At the 29 June 1980 Gay Freedom Day parade in San Francisco, Santos met photographer Gail Sherman Jones, who took the first of these pictures with Santos and her roommate Karen Galeon posed against a building near the parade route. About a month later, Jones arranged to shoot three color portraits of Santos by San Francisco Bay, and two portraits of Santos performing at Finocchio's. These photographs were never published. Also included with this lot is an unpublished 1980 article by Jones about Santos, "Portrait of a Professional Female Impersonator."

Candy Darling 1944-1974 Signed matchbook from the rock club Max's Kansas City. Matchbook from Max's Kansas City and its sister club Max's Terre Haute, signed and inscribed on interior "Candy Darling, 79 First Ave., Massapequa Pk., 11762, 516-798-4219"; minor wear and foxing, used with matches all removed. The transgender pioneer Candy Darling was discovered by Andy Warhol and appeared in several of his films. Warhol's unofficial base of operations was the back room at the rock club Max's Kansas City, where he held court with his Factory entourage. This matchbook is a memento of somebody's chance meeting with the starlet, who shared the address of her Long Island childhood home, which she sometimes referred to grandly as her "country house." The matchbook dates from between September 1969 and April 1972, the lifespan of Max's Kansas City's short-lived uptown outpost, Max's Terre Haute. It was likely signed early in that span, during the heyday of Warhol's association of the club, and before Darling began making a permanent residence in the city.

Keller's was long known as New York's oldest leather bar, opening on the ground floor of an old waterfront hotel at the corner of West and Barrow in 1956, and remaining in business until 1998. Some say the Village People's 1977 debut record was photographed outside Keller's. We can't confirm that, but the album does credit "Ron Nickolson from Keller's" on tambourine.

A striking pair of albums with approximately 1,000 photographs depicting queer life and artistry primarily on Fire Island and in NYC. 1967-71. Chromogenic and silver prints (71) Fire Island has long been a safe haven and vibrant social and cultural hub for the NYC queer community. This personal pair of albums, created by a NYC-based gay couple, carries us through multiple seasons of life vacationing on the island with their friends. From energetic costume parties, bundled-up autumn boat rides, and drag shows in the city, to road trips, naps in the sun, and painting, these albums document rich and dynamic lives being lived alongside a period of historic uprising and change. Most photos are fixed to the album sheets, each sheet with a numeric notation and date, and an additional numeric notation under each photo, in ink.

Pierre Asselin Beach / Fire Island. 1979 Offset lithograph poster. A poster advertising "Beach," an all night party to benefit the Fire Island Pines Fire Department. Conceived of as a fundraiser, with money going towards the purchase of a much needed to fire truck (the 500 or residences in The Pines at that time were primarily wooden structures), this legendary all-night beach party of 1979 proved not only to be successful - a new fire engine was purchased with the funds raised- but also was a seismic social event, breaking the mold and setting the standard for similar mega events and fundraisers for years to come. Referred to as Studio 54 in the sand, the setting was designed by Scott Bromley (already famous for having designed the interior of studio 54), Fern Mallis and Ron Martin. The resulting beach setting was an architectural marvel and an unforgettable venue for an exceptional soiree. Originally Donna Summer was slated to perform but when she backed out she was replaced by France Joli, who had shot to fame with her single "Come to Me," the Ritchie Family, Asha Puthli and Bonnie Pointer, of the Pointer sisters. Famous attendees included Andy Warhol, Calvin Klein and the Village People, in all over 3200 tickets were sold. For such a large and influential event, very little original material remains. We could find no other copy of this poster on the market. The design features the setting sun over the beach, settling into the horizon and the ocean.

LaRouche Motel. 1986. Flattened cardboard box with printed pink paper wrapper covering 4 sides; minimal wear. [San Francisco]: Q.U.E.E.R.S. (Queens Under Every Right-wing System), 1986 This was created to oppose a 1986 ballot initiative, California Proposition 64. Created by followers of fringe political figure Lyndon LaRouche, it would have led to the quarantining of AIDS patients. This box, about the size of the pest control product Roach Motel, reads: "LaRouche Motel. Falwell, Robertson & LaRouche trap. He's poisonous. He's a mess. He's spreading. Rouchies check in . . . but they don't check out." The San Francisco Examiner of 28 September 1986 reported that these were on sale at the corner of 18th and Castro. None traced in OCLC or at auction.

This was the first poster designed after the Silence=Death Collective joined with ACT UP. "The image for [this poster] was always a fait accompli: there was no controversy over whether to depict Reagan. We chose an image of him that would translate into a one-color graphic, flattening him into iconography that could be easily recognizable from a distance and on television B roll, the images used to illustrate voiceover news reports" (After Silence p. 72). This is the first of two printings of this poster. The later printings bare the imprint of the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power [ACT UP].

No place, circa mid-1990 Links the tobacco conglomerate Philip Morris with both its support for homophobic senator Jesse Helms and its production of Miller Beer, noting that Helms "leads the charge against AIDS education/treatment/prevention, Gay and Lesbian rights, women's reproductive rights, the environment, and every other progressive issue." The boycott was discussed widely in the national press in July and August 1990. The producer of this poster is not named, but a variant with the same image and shorter caption text is found among the ACT-UP New York papers at New York Public Library.

This poster advertises a two-day concert held at the Oakland Auditorium featuring many of Olivia's most popular artists, including Linda Tillery, Cris Williamson, and Meg Christian. Earlier that year, the label had released their popular compilation, "Lesbian Concentrate: A Lesbianthology of Songs and Poems," as part of the national protests against Anita Bryant. Childcare was provided; the first day of the concert was billed as "especially for women."

Joan Jett Blakk, also known as Terence Alan Smith, ran four satirical political campaigns from 1991 to 1999, most notably her 1992 write-in campaign for the presidency with the Queer Nation Party. Her running mate was lesbian military activist Miriam Ben-Shalom. These flyers were from their effort to get their ticket on the Illinois ballot, when they made an appearance at the annual Halsted Market Days street festival in Chicago's Northalsted neighborhood. One reads "Sign our petitions today! I want you to put queers on the ballot in Illinois." The other depicts presidents Reagan and Bush as "two tired old fools" expressing alarm at the Jett Blakk / Ben-Shalom ticket.

At least 6 issues were released through 1989. Offered here are the first two. Each contains approximately 40 photocopied leaves on a variety of paper stocks (some hand-colored), enhanced with collage elements, with contributing artists listed on the title page. None others traced at auction; only 3 institutions in OCLC. Volume I, number 1 is titled "Visions of Eros: Erotic Time Capsule," and features a wrapped Trojan condom adhered to the first page. Signed lower left. *Luis Frangella was born in Buenos Aires in 1944, and moved to New York in 1973 to study visual arts at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In the 1980's he became a key figure among New York's East village art scene, working with David Wojnarowicz, Mike Bidlo, Keith Haring and more. In early 1990, Frangella suffered a seizure that left him physically impaired but he continued to create. He died on December 7th 1990.
