The 34th New York City Gay Pride Parade. Archive of 136 photos. June 27, 2004.
Chromogenic prints
The spring of 2004 marked a pivotal point in the modern gay rights movement, with Massachusetts becoming the first state to legalize gay marriage in the United States. As the city continued to feel the impact the AIDS crisis had had on their queer communities, a reason to celebrate was a welcome change. This celebratory energy is palpable throughout this vibrant archive of New York City's 2004 Pride parade. Countless ornate and eccentric costumes and icons, including characters from The Wizard of Oz, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and RuPaul, are captured walking along Christopher Street and atop parade floats.
