Flyers and handprinted signs relating to the anti-Anita Bryant Florida orange juice boycott. Circa 1977.

Anita Bryant was a pop singer, and was most famous as the brand representative for the Florida Citrus Commission. When she launched a side career as an anti-gay activist in 1977, it sparked a national boycott of Florida oranges that lasted three years. This lot relates to a San Francisco-area protest against Bryant circa 1977. Includes:

4 manuscript signs. A list headed "Boycott Supported By" fills two of the signs. Among the more interesting supporters are Jim Jones' People's Temple (a year before the horrific mass Kool-Aid suicide), Harvey Milk, and Castro Camera. The other two signs read simply "Recruiting Station." These are all written on verso of recycled printed posters for a concert by the Black Light Explosion Co.

5 related flyers from the same period: two asking us to "Put the Squeeze on Florida Citrus," and three sharing news stories on the issue.

  • Dimensions: 22 x 17 in. (55.9 x 43.2 cm.) and smaller
