Gellage Nr. 5. 1989; printed 2004.
Gelatin silver emulsion transfer collage

This work is number 4 from an edition of 12.

  • Provenance:
    John Stevenson Gallery, New York

    Notes:
Since late 1989, Czech artist Michal Macku has been systematically using and developing his own creative technique, named "Gellage" (a word combining "collage" and "gelatin"). It consists of a layered photocollage, in which the emulsion is torn, manipulated, and reset on the paper base.

The technique involves using more than one negative per image, making it impossible to create identical copies. While each Gellage is an original work of art, each motif is available as an edition of 12.

"In my Gellages, I used the naked human body (mostly my own). Through the Gellage process, I abstracted and distorted this specific body. From the very beginning, this process fascinated me by transcending the traditional limits associated with analog photography." --Michal Macku (source: the artist's website)
