Centering the materiality and history of bousillage in which dried Spanish moss is used as a binder with local clay to create strong, sustainable building structures, Pierrottie honors the merging sides of his ancestry. Where Acadians used bousillage as a building material, as taught by Indigenous tribal members, Pierrottie creates sculptural images such as turtles and boats, and masks inspired by African and Southwest Indigenous American traditions. He is a 2020 recipient of the Louisiana Trust for Historic Preservation's "Living Trades Award". Pierrottie's bousillage work and artworks have been presented in historic and contemporary art contexts such as New Orleans' Arthur Roger Gallery, the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C, and Glen Pitre's 1985 film "Belizaire the Cajun" (for which he also played a small role). Partnering with his wife, writer Denise Harding, the couple has worked on multiple historic restoration projects including the 1790s Armand Broussard House in Vermilionville, Magnolia Mound in Baton Rouge, among many other significant properties.

Marlowe Parker American/Louisiana, 20th c. "The Moose Heads, Ida Mea and Zula Mae, Person to Person" oil on canvas 2010, signed and dated lower right, signed, titled and dated en verso, framed. Note: Louisiana native Marlowe Parker served over twenty-two years in the Louisiana State Penitentiary (Angola) for cocaine possession. While in prison, he learned to paint and became an accomplished artist. Parker has stated that his arrival at Angola presented a moment of choice – either embrace the destructive nature of incarceration or turn his life around by doing something positive. Art became his escape, and his talent quickly became apparent. Parker draws artistic inspiration from his artist stepfather, Gilbert Green, who also served time at Angola, and Clementine Hunter's famous folk art paintings of plantation life. Parker has built a creative world of both imaginary characters and people from history or his own past that inhabit his canvases. His "moose heads" are caricatures with large heads, long necks and elongated figures that he depicts in lively urban and rural settings. His work has elements of both universal truth and humor. He has said: "When I paint, I laugh at my own art. It tickles me to death." His scenes of Louisiana life are colorful, playful and raw – at odds with the prison setting in which the artist created them. Parker's talent as an artist now extends beyond his own easel as he also teaches painting.

Inspired by Maine's rustic and natural environs, and the many New York artists who summered there, Dahlov Ipcar spent her final years in Maine on a salt marsh farm. Lot: 96 - Chuck Crosby, American/Louisiana 1957-1994, "Landscape #", oil on canvas

Chuck Crosby American/Louisiana, 1957-1994 "Landscape #" oil on canvas signed and titled on stretcher, "WYES - TV Auction" tag attached to hanging wire, framed. Note: In Chuck Crosby's mysterious grisaille landscape offered here, a monumental shark fin-like peak emerges from a body of water, leaving a rock in shadow with slow motion ripples. Perhaps ideation rather than location, "Landscape #" may be related more to the body than a body of water. A serpentine, undulating form twists near a felled tree, itself an allegory of helplessness with broken upturned arms and neck. The artist was best known for his colorful palette and painting on found objects such as vases, gourds, and bottles. In contrast, this painting is part of Crosby's black and white surrealist series that local art critic Doug MacCash highlighted as he memorialized the artist in Offbeat magazine in 1994. A self-defined "naïve" artist, Cosby had already adapted to using his other hand to paint following nerve damage in his dominant arm when he was then diagnosed with AIDS. Crosby died of complications related to the disease on July 15, 1994, just short of the last opening of his work at Arthur Roger Gallery in New Orleans.

Lot: 109 - American School 20th c., "Desire is a Double Edged Sword", mixed media on canvas

American School 20th c. "Desire is a Double Edged Sword" mixed media on canvas illegibly signed en verso, unframed. Note: As a late example of Neo-Expressionism, "Desire is a Double Edged Sword" refers both to graffiti and street art. The simultaneously built and cut up surface echoes the proliferation of palimpsests of peeling flyers, paint, graffiti, and scratchiti on buildings and random surfaces throughout urban areas. Is the double-edged sword of "Desire" written here a yearning, a street, or another physical location? The statement "Desire is a Double Edged Sword" hovers low like clouds heavy with moisture. This work appears to be comprised primarily of water-based media - pastel, chalk, and aerosol paint with areas incised and peeled away. A chalky, red-eyed toothsome skeleton figure leers sickly above while an ideation of spoon and syringe hovers just out of reach; objects that appear and disappear under drips of paint hint at the un/intentional act of disappearance that attends so many stories of disenfranchisement and violence in active addiction. The inscription/prescription, "EAT THE SUN" is carved into thick yellow acrylic paint that radiates and bleeds its rays; slashes to the surface would let actual light shine through if given the chance. The dripping sun and an effluvium of hazy blue and pink clouds hover tauntingly over a black permanent midnight.

Provenance: Collection of James Resko and the late Richard Gasperi, New Orleans, LA. Note: Renowned for her self-taught painting style, Theora Hamblett became one of Mississippi's most celebrated and distinguished artists. Hamblett began her professional career later in life at the age of fifty-five, eschewing the abstract style popular at the time in favor of subjects more personal. Over the ensuing twenty-two years, she developed an extraordinary oeuvre that is as unique as it is powerful. Many of Hamblett's paintings concentrated on her childhood memories, especially of the chicken farm in Paris, Mississippi where she spent her childhood. In nearly all her landscape paintings, she included animals or people, with the belief that those additions gave life to the scenes. After an accident which broke her hip and required surgery in 1954, Hamblett began to paint her dreams and visions, many with religious themes and elements. The same year, New York gallery owner and famous collector, Betty Parsons, discovered Hamblett's work and subsequently one of her paintings was included in a 1955 show of new acquisitions at the Museum of Modern Art. Hamblett's paintings have two main hallmarks that set them apart – pattern and color. Almost obsessively flat areas of color offset by the equally flat subjects are in dramatic contrast to her distinctive and highly patterned trees. The effect of the foliage evokes movement, as each leaf is individually painted resulting in layers of color. Hamblett was a lifelong resident of Lafayette County in Mississippi, and upon her death in 1977, she willed most of her collection of paintings to the University of Mississippi, making them rare to the market today.

Note: Jack Pardue graduated from the Ringling School of Art in 1964. Through years of exploration and study, he mastered a technique in working with pastels that defined his long and successful career as an artist. Pardue considered his pastels to be paintings, not drawings, and he approached each composition with both precision in design and an intuitive thoughtfulness of color. He often utilized high-key colors, once saying: "They allow me the freedom to express myself without constraint." His color choices and use of linen canvas as the ideal ground resulted in luminous and lush works. Pardue was not only a venerated artist but also a dedicated teacher. His work in landscape and portraiture garnered numerous awards and was exhibited at the Smithsonian, White House, Strategic Air Command Museum and American History Museum. Pardue was the subject of a feature article in the February 2010 issue of American Artist Magazine.

Ida Rittenberg Kohlmeyer American/Louisiana, 1912-1997 "Circus Series, 84-6" oil and mixed media on canvas 1984, signed and dated lower center, framed. Note: A native of New Orleans, Ida Kohlmeyer achieved international acclaim as an artist and developed her own unique perspective on abstract art. She is widely considered one of the most influential artists from Louisiana and the South, although her art career did not begin until later in life. Following graduation from Sophie Newcomb Memorial College at Tulane University in 1933, Kohlmeyer married and raised a family. Dissatisfied with what she called a "vapid, dilettante life," she first joined the John McCrady Art School in 1947, and then began classes at Newcomb College under the tutelage of Pat Trivigno in 1950. She eventually pursued a master's degree in fine arts, producing primarily figurative studies and representational work for her thesis. Following the completion of her degree in 1956, Kohlmeyer spent a formative summer at the art colony in Provincetown, Massachusetts studying under Hans Hofmann. Abstraction appealed to Kohlmeyer, and she likened her sudden shift from representation to being freed from prison. The following year, Mark Rothko came to New Orleans in a visiting artist position at Tulane and moved his family into the Metairie home of Ida Kohlmeyer's late mother. The resulting friendship between Kohlmeyer and Rothko would have a profound influence on the trajectory of her work. By the 1970s, Kohlmeyer had transcended the influences of Hofmann and Rothko and moved entirely to non-objective subject matter. She developed her own code of schematic symbols, which she often arranged in a grid pattern on her canvases or rearranged into sculptural totems. These works are abstract, yet linguistic, and hint at the deep personal emotion behind them. While the symbols present a pictographic code, their meaning remains elusive. Throughout her active career, Kohlmeyer successfully exhibited her work in prestigious galleries and museums nationwide, with over one hundred solo exhibitions. She received the National Women's Caucus for Art's outstanding achievement award in 1980 and was the subject of her first major retrospective exhibition at the Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1983. Kohlmeyer can be considered a matriarch among American artists, as she broke the mold for southern artists and women artists alike during her lifetime. Her legacy is one of joyful, colorful works and a generation of female creators who follow in her footsteps. Reference: Plante, Michael. Ida Kohlmeyer: Systems of Color. New York: Hudson Hills Press, 2004; Kessler, Jane. Ida Kohlmeyer: Thirty Years. Charlotte, NC: The Mint Museum, 1983.

Alferez worked in Texas before making his way to Chicago to study art under the revered sculptor and educator Lorado Taft (1860-1936) at the prestigious Art Institute of Chicago. Taft had personally invited the young Alferez to Chicago after seeing his work during a lecture tour of the South. Admired for his elegant, stylized figural sculptures, Alferez's work is found throughout his adoptive New Orleans, most especially in the Botanical Garden of City Park. Alferez, then involved with the Works Progress Administration as its New Orleans director along with the architect Richard Koch and the landscape artist William Wierdorn, was instrumental in the designing, planning and eventual construction of City Park, which soon became one of the artistic highlights of the city. The work offered here is one of his most popular and coveted forms entitled "Woman in a Huipil." An ode to the human figure, Alferez's sculptures simultaneously convey a sense of dignity while suggesting an undercurrent of intense emotion. There is a vitality and urgency to his work that reflects the defiant and unbreakable soul of New Orleans.

Note: Known as one of the South's premier landscape painters, Elemore Morgan, Jr. captured the coastal prairies of southwest Louisiana with his vibrant and large-scale paintings. Morgan was born in Baton Rouge and raised on his grandfather's farm in what was then a rural area. His father was a noted photographer who often allowed his son to accompany him on his artistic travels throughout the state, inspiring in Morgan an early love of Louisiana. Morgan studied art at Louisiana State University under Caroline Durieux, Ralston Crawford and David Le Doux, before serving in the United States Air Force in the Korean War. In 1954, he continued his education at the Ruskin School of Art at Oxford University, graduating in 1957. Morgan returned to Louisiana and began teaching at then Southwestern Louisiana University in Lafayette in 1965. His thirty-two-year tenure at the school would see Morgan influence and mentor hundreds of artists, even as he continued to paint and further his own successful career. Morgan found inspiration in the oak trees, terraced fields, stormy skies, vernacular architecture and vast spaces of the marshes. Following in the footsteps of the Fauvists with their use of color and the Impressionists with their emphasis on light, Morgan's gestural paintings are a lasting legacy for Louisiana and future generations of American landscape artists.

Note: Throughout Melissa Bonin's celebrated career, she has and continues to experiment with a multitude of media, recently publishing a book featuring her works alongside her poetry in both English and French entitled When Bayous Speak, Lorsque les bayous parlent. Her paintings have evolved from her earlier abstract canvases featuring an experimental grid-like layout of colorful pastel squares to her more recent moody bayou landscapes which are as lyrical as her pen. A New Iberia native, Bonin started painting at the University of Louisiana in Lafayette at the age of fifteen at the insistence of local artist Elemore Morgan, Jr. who became her mentor and whose expressive landscapes inspired her subject matter and approach. At ULL, she also had the opportunity to study under Tom Secrest, Herman Mhire and William Moreland, all of whom she lists as influences. After earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1981, she traveled abroad to study art and French in Paris, Angers and the south of France. She furthered her studies upon her return to the United States at Bennington College and the Massachusetts School of Fine Art in Boston. Bonin has achieved much recognition and many accolades for her work, receiving important commissions, such as a forty-eight-foot mural for the city of New Iberia, the Bunk Johnson award for Visual Arts, and an Atchafalaya Basin Foundation Grant. Her works are in many important private and public collections and have graced the walls of institutions such as the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, Knoxville Museum of Art, and the Bayou Teche Museum, among others. A constant innovator who draws upon her Cajun heritage as inspiration, Bonin has become an ambassador for Cajun culture and the state of Louisiana. With her adept brushstrokes, she captures the timeless, luminous spirit of the bayou and its enduring beauty - symbolic of the resilience of the once violently displaced Cajun people. Her approach to creation is meditative, working in solitary silence and applying color to canvas instinctually and subconsciously. "Landscapes permit me to sit on the edge of abstraction and reality. You can manipulate colors in a way that produces a feeling of the landscape without copying everything realistically." Ref.: Kemp, John R. Expressions of Place: The Contemporary Louisiana Landscape. Rise Delmar-Ochsner American/Louisiana, 1944-2025 "Reading in Bed" acrylic on canvas 1988, signed and dated lower left, framed. Note: Rise Delmar-Ochsner was born and raised in New York City where her mother was an artist. She graduated from Columbia University and later attended Tulane Medical School as one of only a handful of women accepted under the ten percent quota of the time. Delmar-Ochsner discovered her own love of art while at Columbia and continued to paint through medical school and beyond. In New Orleans, she maintained a thriving ophthalmology practice until deciding to pursue art full-time. She relocated to Santa Barbara, California in 1995 and created an impressive body of work. However, missing medicine, she returned to practice in 2007. After nineteen years away, Delmar-Ochsner moved back to New Orleans in 2014 where she lived until her death in 2025. An in-demand portraitist, Delmar-Ochsner earned commissions to paint Mick Jagger for a poster for his New Orleans tour stop, Carol Burnett's cat and fifty famous chefs including Leah Chase, Emeril Lagasse and Susan Spicer on behalf of Robert and Margrit Mondavi, all winners of the Robert Mondavi Culinary Award of Excellence. Her works were featured in numerous exhibitions locally and nationally. While known primarily as a figurative painter, Delmar-Ochsner's expressive, colorful style translates beautifully to expansive landscapes such as the monumental work offered here. The bird's eye view of rolling hills and fields intersected by a river and curving roadways encompasses the viewer in a verdant, lush and lyrical panorama.
