American/Louisiana, 20th c.
"The Moose Heads, Ida Mea and Zula Mae, Person to Person"
oil on canvas
2010, signed and dated lower right, signed, titled and dated en verso, framed.

Note: Louisiana native Marlowe Parker served over twenty-two years in the Louisiana State Penitentiary (Angola) for cocaine possession. While in prison, he learned to paint and became an accomplished artist. Parker has stated that his arrival at Angola presented a moment of choice – either embrace the destructive nature of incarceration or turn his life around by doing something positive. Art became his escape, and his talent quickly became apparent. Parker draws artistic inspiration from his artist stepfather, Gilbert Green, who also served time at Angola, and Clementine Hunter's famous folk art paintings of plantation life. Parker has built a creative world of both imaginary characters and people from history or his own past that inhabit his canvases. His "moose heads" are caricatures with large heads, long necks and elongated figures that he depicts in lively urban and rural settings. His work has elements of both universal truth and humor. He has said: "When I paint, I laugh at my own art. It tickles me to death." His scenes of Louisiana life are colorful, playful and raw – at odds with the prison setting in which the artist created them. Parker's talent as an artist now extends beyond his own easel as he also teaches painting.
