Sandor Bernath was known for his stylized watercolors of sailing ships. He was a student of Edward Hopper. Born in Hungary on December 30, 1892, Bernath immigrated in his youth to the United States, and by the early 1920s had begun to establish himself within New York art circles. The master builder on the site noticed Rothbort drawing on unfinished plaster and decided he was too talented to be a watchman. As a result, Rothbort became a decorator, creating designs in paint and plaster for the homes of wealthy Manhattanites. A fine copy of Erich Maria Remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front. Little, Brown and Company. June, 1929. First [American] Printing, with the first state dust jacket ("First American Printing 100,000 copies"). Heavy weave grey cloth binding in Fine condition (very slight age darkening). The jacket is very good with a bit of edge chipping and tears, creases, wear at folds, and one spot on the front with loss to picture (as if a label was poorly removed?), and one "dig " on the back jacket cover, resulting in loss (about 2"). See photos.  Scarce in the first state jacket.
