U.S. Sharps New Model 1863 Cartridge Conversion Carbine Manufactured in 1863-1865. The stock was replaced during the conversion process, but the buttplate still has the tell-tale cutout for the tail of the patch box door. The markings are standard. The bore has the correct three-groove liner used on most of the 27,000 carbines converted in the late 1860s. Many of these carbines saw hard use in the Civil War and then in the Indian Wars until the adoption of the Model 1873 Trapdoor. Manufacturer: Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company Model: NM 1863 Conversion BBL: 22 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 50-70 U.S. Govt Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: 91761 Class: Antique Condition: Fine. 30% of the arsenal refurbished blue finish remains on the barrel. There is a flash of bright original niter blue on the breechblock, some small patches of original case colors, and mostly gray and brown patina on the balance. The saddle ring is absent. The wood is very good and has numerous scrapes and dings, including a band of scrapes on the left side of the butt. The conversion cartouche and several of the other markings remain crisp, but others are faint from the conversion process. Mechanically excellent.
