Sharps New Model 1863 Cartridge Conversion Saddle Ring Carbine Manufactured in 1863-1865. The stock was replaced during the conversion process, but the buttplate still has the tell-tale cutout for the tail of the patch box door. The markings are standard. The bore has the three-groove liner used on most of the 27,000 carbines converted in the late 1860s. Many of these carbines saw hard use in the Civil War and then in the Indian Wars until the adoption of the Model 1873 Trapdoor.
