Lot: 301 - A JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINT SUGOROKU WITH RARE ORIG WRAP

Utagawa Yoshikazu (Attributed) Genpei Sugoroku Circa 1860s The Sugoroku board game attributed to Utagawa Yoshikazu features portraits of legendary samurai. The 19th century woodblock game boards called Sugoroku were similar to games and game boards of today, but were also the primary way that Japanese children (and adults) learned their history and geography. Sugoroku were basically ''start-to-finish'' board games where one would roll a die, move their piece along a path of squares, and the first person to reach the goal wins. The play was similar to the modern day game of Snakes and Ladders. This example is found with its very, very rare matching original 1850s envelope cover intact on the back of the frame. Usually, these paper wrappers were ripped apart and thrown away by kids the day the game was bought. Likewise, the games themselves were often folded and unfolded until they fell apart and were discarded. To find one with the wrapper print is even more remarkable.
