The sacred scroll painting depicts the life and narrative cycles of Shakyamuni Buddha seated in dhyanasana on a multi-colored lotus throne over a decorative pedestal. His right hand is extended in bhumisparsha mudra (the earth-witness gesture), and his left hand supports an alms bowl. He is flanked by his two chief disciples while the surrounding composition is densely populated with active, miniature narrative vignettes set against a traditional landscape of rolling blue-green hills, stylized clouds, and Chinese-style architectural structures. The reverse of the thangka features important, complete original consecration elements and the complete original multi-colored silk brocade mountings, protective yellow silk face veil, and twin orange hanging ribbons are present as well.
