A Pictorial Guide to Women's Manners and Places Sugoroku

1850-1860

Likely intended for female players, this elaborate 'ascension' game, where the player starts as a young woman at the bottom and move through various social and cultural experiences, depicts various cultural milestones, scenic travels including a view of Mount Fuji, and artistic pursuits such as music and tea ceremony.

Sugoroku were basically 'start-to-finish' board games where one would roll a die, move their piece along a path of squares, and the first person to reach the goal wins. The play was similar to the modern day game of Snakes and Ladders. In 19th century Japan players often learned of new places or historical events while playing.
