EARLY AMERICAN IMPRINTS, 1795–1849. COLLECTION OF OVER 200 PAMPHLETS IN 21 SAMMELBANDS FROM THE LIBRARY OF NEW YORK STATESMAN ROBERT H. PRUYN (1815–1882), INCLUDING 1804 HAMILTON / CROSWELL LIBEL TRIAL SPEECH.. Albany, New York and various American imprints, 1795–1849. 8vo, bindings contemporary leather over marbled boards. A substantial assemblage of approximately 210 pamphlets bound in 21 half-calf sammelbands from the working library of Robert Hewson Pruyn (1815–1882), Albany lawyer, legislator, and later United States minister to Japan. Two folding maps are present, in addition to a number of plates, charts and in-text illustrations. Among the earliest and most notable items in the collection is The Speeches at Full Length… in the Great Cause of the People against Harry Croswell (New York, 1804), preserving the arguments in the celebrated libel trial in which Alexander Hamilton articulated his influential defense of freedom of the press. The collection also includes early publications relating to the development of New York's internal improvements, including the 1817 Report of the Canal Commissioners concerning the Erie Canal, later canal reports and memorials, and an 1847 Buffalo harbor improvement report containing a folding map of the harbor at Black Rock, measuring approximately 15" x 36". Other pamphlets reflect the political, religious, and social reform movements of the early republic and antebellum period. These include the 1815 declaration of the Society of People known as Shakers refusing military service, the 1808 account of Francisco de Miranda's revolutionary expedition, and Samuel Wilkeson's critique of Harriet Martineau's influential travel narrative Retrospect of Western Travel (1838). Notable among these is a presentation copy of a report on the Seaman's Aid Society inscribed by Sarah J. Hale, reformer and influential editor of Godey's Lady Book. The collection preserves ample evidence of the literary, artistic and cultural institutions shaping public life in New York during this period, including publications and catalogues issued by the American Art-Union, the National Academy of Design, and the Albany Gallery of Fine Arts. Education and religion are heavily represented, with numerous works relating to Union College, Albany College, Rutgers and Hamilton College, among many others. The collection features author-inscribed presentation copies, examples bearing the original manuscript ownership signature of Pruyn, and at least one pamphlet bearing the ownership signature of Gerritt Y. Lansing (1783-1862), a prominent lawyer and New York State assemblyman whose daughter Pruyn later wed.
