Winchester Model 1886 Saddle Ring 45-70 Lever Action Carbine Winchester Model 1886 Saddle Ring Carbine originally manufactured c. 1908. This carbine has a standard 22 inch round barrel and full length magazine. The barrel has the standard block-mounted, nickel-silver, front sight located ahead of the barrel band and folding leaf rear sight graduated to "20". The left side of the receiver has a staple-mounted saddle ring. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped. Factory eyelets for detachable sling swivels are mounted on the lower barrel band and belly of buttstock. The barrel, magazine, barrel bands, receiver, bolt, loading gate, trigger and carbine style buttplate are blued, and the hammer and lever are color casehardened. The stock and forearm are oil-finished, straight grain, American walnut. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. PAT. OCT. 14. 1884, JAN. 20. 1885" ahead of the lower barrel band. The caliber: "45-70." is roll-stamped on the upper left side of the barrel just ahead of the receiver. Oval Winchester "W/P" proof marks are stamped on the top of the barrel and receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped, "MODEL 1886/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK" in three lines. The lower tang is roll-stamped with "1884/1885" dates behind the trigger and the serial number "147512A" is stamped in ahead of the rear tang screw. Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1886-Carbine BBL: 22 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 45/70 Finish: blue Grips: Serial Number: 147512A Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun Condition: Very fine. Nearly all the factory quality blue is present on the barrel and barrel bands. The blue on the magazine tube has faded slightly. The receiver, bolt and loading gate have close to 95% of the blue finish. The buttplate shows typical handling wear but retains close to 90% of the blue finish. The hammer and lever have 80% of the vivid case colors. The barrel and receiver markings are crisp. The stock and forearm show light-moderate handling wear and are in very good overall condition. Winchester Model 1886 Saddle Ring Carbines are scarce in any condition. Because Winchester carbines were typically intended to be "working guns" they typically saw hard use and are very difficult to obtain in very fine or better condition. This is a solid representative example of a Winchester Model 1886 Saddle Ring 45-70 Carbine.
