Very Fine Documented Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine with Factory Letter The factory letter describes this carbine, as: "Type Carbine, Caliber: 40/82" and states that it was shipped from Winchester on June 29, 1901. The carbine has a standard 22-inch round barrel and full length magazine. The barrel has a special order front sight blade with colored bead mounted in the steel sight blocks and folding leaf rear sight graduated to "10". A folding combination rear sight is mounted on the receiver tang. The left side of the receiver has a staple-mounted saddle ring. The barrel, magazine, barrel bands, bolt and loading gate are blued, and the receiver, hammer, trigger, lever and carbine style buttplate are color casehardened. The stock and forearm are oil-finished, straight grain, American walnut. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: -MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. - " between the lower barrel band and the rear sight. The caliber: "40-82/W.C.F." is roll-stamped in two lines between the rear sight and the receiver. The lower tang is roll-stamped with "1884/1885" dates behind the trigger and the serial number ahead of the rear tang screw. This scarce carbine is all original and retains 80% of the original blue and 60% plus color casehardened finish. Nearly all of the blue is present on the barrel and magazine. There is some scattered pitting on the barrel at the muzzle, on the sides of the barrel band and on the front sight blade. The Winchester legend and caliber markings are crisp. The barrel bands retain 40% of the blue finish. Nearly all of the blue is present on the bolt. Traces of blue are present in the loading gate. The sides of the receiver have strong case colors. The case colors on contact points and top and bottom of the receiver have faded to a silver patina. The hammer and sides of the lever retain nearly all of the case colors. The bottom of the lever has silvered and has two spots of pitting. The case colors on the buttplate have aged to a silver patina with scattered patches of age discoloration and some pitting on the toe and heel. The walnut stock and forearm are in very good overall condition with some scattered handling marks. Model 1886 carbines are one of the most difficult of all Winchester lever action carbines to find.
