Fine Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Rifle with Detroit Inscription Manufactured in 1870 as a third model with the serial numbered stamped in correct block style digits behind the trigger, single tang screw and a flare in the brass receiver at the junction with the forearm. The left side of the frame has an engraved inscription: "D.N. Avery/Detroit, Mich." Among the possible original owners is Darius Newell Avery, who was a director at the Union National Bank in the Detroit area circa 1888 and is buried in Detroit's Woodmere Cemetery. The Union National Bank was established after the reorganization of the Market Bank in 1886 and was later dissolved in 1906 after acquired by the Dime Savings Bank of Detroit. The barrel is fitted with dovetail blade and replacement elevation adjustable (missing elevator) sights and is stamped with the two-line Winchester address marking (mostly covered by the rear sight). The straight grip stock is fitted with a trapdoor crescent buttplate. The four-piece cleaning rod is included. The '66 secured Winchester's place in the annals of the West and launched a long line of successful Winchester lever actions that remain popular to this day and still retain the basic form of the '66. Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1866 BBL: 24 inch octagon Stock: walnut Gauge: 44 RF Finish: blue Grips: Serial Number: 36301 Class: Antique Condition: Fine.
