Documented Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifle with Factory Letter Winchester Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifle manufactured in 1895. This rifle is complete with a Cody Firearms Museum letter that describes this rifle as: "Rifle, 40/82, Octagon barrel, Plain trigger, Checkered stock", and "Pistol grip". The letter states this rifle was shipped from Winchester on July 30, 1895. The rifle has a charcoal blue barrel, magazine, bolt and trigger. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever and crescent buttplate have a color casehardened finish. The loading gate is niter blue. The forearm and pistol grip stock are deluxe, highly figured, fancy grain walnut with Winchester "Style H" checkering and a piano finish. The bottom of the pistol grip has an ebony inlay. The full octagon barrel has a Lyman combination front sight with white bead and a sporting style, buckhorn, rear sight with flat top and screw-adjustable centerpiece. A Lyman folding combination sight with coarse knurled post is mounted on the receiver tang. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The caliber, "40-82 W.C.F.", is roll-stamped on the top barrel flat behind the rear sight. The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are roll-stamped on the lower tang behind the trigger and the serial number is stamped in script numerals between the rear tang screws. Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1886 BBL: 26 inch Stock: highly figured walnut checkered Gauge: 40-82 WCF Finish: blue/case-hardened Grips: Serial Number: 105495 Class: Antique Condition: Fine. 75% of the original blue finish is present on the barrel and magazine. The Winchester legend and caliber markings are crisp. The bolt has nearly all of the blue finish intact. 50% of fire blue finish remains on the loading gate. The case colors on the forearm cap, receiver and crescent buttplate remain 30% intact with the balance having faded to an attractive mottled silver patina. Most of the case colors are present on the hammer and the sides of the lever. The highly figured, fancy grain walnut stock and forearm remain in very good condition and retain close to 90% of the refinished piano varnish finish. The "Style H" checkering is sharp. The stock has a few scattered handling marks with one significant mark on the right side near the top of the buttplate. This is a good looking example of a scarce and very desirable Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifle with casehardened receiver and deluxe, fancy grain walnut pistol grip stock.
