Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Unique Cummins Scope This Winchester Model 1873 lever action rifle was manufactured in 1886 and subsequently fitted with a unique Lawson C. Cummins telescopic sight. The scope is 19 inches in length and marked "L.C. CUMMINS/MONTPELIER, VT./PAT. JUNE 14. 1892". It is offset to the left and mounted with brackets dovetailed into the barrel. Cummins introduced the scope in 1887 and remained in business into the early 1900s. Cummins scopes are scarce. The barrel is also fitted with a dovetailed blade front and adjustable rear sporting sights. There is a tang mounted short range peep sight. The top barrel flat ahead of the rear sight is marked with the two line address/patent dates and "38 CAL." at the breech. The serial number is marked on the lower tang, and the bottom of the brass cartridge elevator is marked "38 CAL." "WEW/L.G." is crudely scratched into the bottom of the cartridge elevator. Special order set trigger, full length magazine tube, blue finish and mounted with a smooth walnut forearm with steel end cap and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate with compartment containing a four piece cleaning rod. The metal surfaces have a smooth mottled gray patina with traces of original blue finish in protected areas. The wood is good with overall scattered minor gouges, dents and scratches. The markings are clear. The action is very good. The scope is fine with 70% original thin blue finish remaining, clear markings and clear optics. Writer cannot recall offering another example like this!
