Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968) remains one of the most influential figures in American history. As the foremost leader of the Civil Rights Movement, he championed nonviolent resistance in the fight against racial segregation and injustice, helping transform American society through landmark campaigns such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the Birmingham Campaign, and the March on Washington. The reverse inscription, "I Have A Dream," references King's iconic August 28, 1963 speech delivered from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, one of the most celebrated and consequential addresses in American history. This medallion carries additional significance through its provenance from the personal collection of Willie Mays, widely regarded as one of the greatest baseball players of all time and an important African American public figure during the civil rights era. Mays met Dr. King in 1963, creating a meaningful connection between two of the twentieth century's most influential African American icons. As a result, this piece not only commemorates King's enduring legacy of equality, peace, justice, and brotherhood, but also serves as a link between the Civil Rights Movement and one of baseball's most legendary figures.
