A handsome vintage polished brass hurricane lantern executed in the timeless railroad style, featuring a brilliantly polished brass body, clear blown glass chimney, and traditional wire globe guard. Combining practical function with enduring decorative appeal, the lantern faithfully follows the iconic design developed during the late nineteenth century for dependable outdoor and railway illumination. Constructed with a substantial brass reservoir, ventilated chimney, and adjustable cotton wick mechanism, the lantern is fitted with a clear glass globe protected by crossed wire supports and surmounted by a folding wire carrying handle. The highly reflective brass finish gives the piece a warm golden luster, making it equally suitable as a functional lighting accessory or as an elegant decorative object. Hurricane lanterns remain among the most recognizable forms of portable lighting, prized for their ingenious wind-resistant construction and rugged reliability. Brass examples are especially sought after for their classic maritime and nautical associations, as well as their striking visual presence in both traditional and contemporary interiors. Ideal for display in a library, study, mountain lodge, lake house, or nautical-inspired collection, this lantern offers timeless appeal and celebrates one of history's most enduring utilitarian designs.

  • Literature: Modeled after the classic Dietz and Feuerhand hurricane lanterns that became indispensable throughout the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, brass railroad-style lanterns continue to be appreciated for their functional engineering, durable construction, and iconic industrial design. Today they remain popular among collectors of maritime, railroad, and Americana lighting.
  • Circa: Late 20th century, circa 1980s–2000.
  • Condition: Very good vintage condition. Brass retains a bright polished finish with light surface wear, minor oxidation, and scattered handling marks consistent with age and use. Clear glass globe is free from noticeable cracks or chips upon inspection. Wick remains present within the burner. Untested for operation and offered as a decorative vintage lighting accessory.
