This is one of fewer than 500 Remington-Keene Frontier Model rifles with special receiver markings and serial numbers purchased by the Interior Department to arm Indian Police c.1880-1881. The rifle has a 24-inch round barrel and full length magazine with carbine style band at the muzzle, sling swivels on the lower barrel band and stock and carbine style buttplate, The upper barrel band has a dove-tail mounted steel front sight blade and the barrel has a folding leaf rear sight graduated to 1000 yards ("10"). The assembly number "25" is stamped on the bottom of the bolt handle, right side of the hammer and on the top of the rear sight base. "51" is stamped in small numerals on the left side of the butt. The top of the bolt lug is roll-stamped: "REMINGTON & SONS ILION N.Y." above the 1874-1877 patent dates in two additional lines. The rifle has no visible Ordnance final inspection or sub-inspection marks. The barrel, magazine, receiver, trigger guard and sling swivels have the Remington commercial blue finish. The bolt handle, hammer and loading gate are polished bright and the barrel bands and buttplate are color case-hardened. The stock is oil finished black walnut. A small rectangular brass collection tag is tacked to the stock just ahead of the lower sling swivel. The Remington-Keene Magazine Bolt Action rifle was the first bolt-action rifle manufactured by Remington. Total production is estimated at 5000 rifles and carbines.
