U.S. Harpers Ferry Model 1855 Percussion Rifle-Musket Dated 1858 with Long Range Sight The Model 1855 rifle-muskets were the first U.S. martial weapons manufactured for use with .58 caliber Minie bullets and were widely used during the Civil War. Only 59,273 were manufactured compared to around a million of the similar Model 1861 rifle-muskets. The 1861 replaced the 1855 due to the Maynard primer's added expense and unreliability. It is dated "1858" on the lock and barrel tang and has a wooden tampion, standard front sight/bayonet lug, the early long range style rear sight graduated 1-4 on the base and 5-7 on the ladder, all iron fittings aside from the brass forend cap, standard lock and barrel proof markings, oval "SB" (inspector Samuel Byington) and "JAS" (sub-inspector James A. Schaeffer) cartouches on the left flat, unmarked buttplate, and "W.C.K" stamps by the bolster and between the cartouches on the left flat (sub-inspector William C. Kirby). Manufacturer: Harpers Ferry Armory Muskets And Carbines Model: 1855-Rifle BBL: 40 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 58 percussion Finish: bright Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Good with gray patina, patches of mild surface pitting, replaced buttplate with a tarnished appearance, some slight chips in the revarnished wood, legible markings, and scattered minor dings, scratches, and marks throughout.
