Southeast Asia, Sumatra, Toba Batak culture, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A sculptural and culturally resonant group of three Toba Batak medicine horns, carved from water buffalo horn and fitted with wooden stoppers at both top and base, reflecting the ritual knowledge and material traditions of Sumatra in the early to mid-20th century. Each horn is gently curved and polished to a deep, lustrous brown-black surface, incised with repeating circular motifs arranged in clustered bands along the upper and lower sections. These subtle geometric patterns lend rhythm and visual texture to the elongated forms, which taper naturally with the horn material and rest on flat wooden bases. The lids are crowned with petite carved figures shown nude and seated in a contemplative posture, legs drawn up and arms folded across their knees. Two figures wear traditional top buns, while the third is distinguished by a conical headdress, suggesting variation in status, role, or symbolic identity. Size of largest: 3.5" L x 2.3" W x 11.6" H (8.9 cm x 5.8 cm x 29.5 cm)

Their simplified yet expressive features convey a quiet authority, anchoring the objects as both containers and guardians of their contents.

Such medicine horns were used to hold ritual substances prepared by datu, or Batak ritual specialists, and were integral to healing practices, divination, and protective rites. The combination of horn, wood, and figural carving embodies the Batak worldview, where natural materials and ancestral presence intertwine. Together, this group presents a striking study in form and meaning - objects shaped by belief, handled with intention, and carried forward as sculptural records of Batak ritual life.
