Interior Page woodblock Cartoon, from that Harper's Weekly issue, Titled: "THE CONDITION OF IRELAND—-POSTING THE GOVERNMENT PROCLAMATION IN CONNEMARA." As shown in scan(s). The image shows the posting of a British government proclamation, probably the The Land Law (Ireland) Act 1881, by armed police while locals discuss it with one of the police. The Act was intended to allow the purchase of land by tenets with part of the purchase price paid by the government. On land purchase, the amount to be advanced by the state was increased from two thirds to three quarters of the purchase money, to be repaid over 35 years. The effect of the Act instituted a system of dual ownership of the land. As a consequence, landlords were afterwards more open to land purchase. The financial assistance was too small to attract tenants as they could not afford it, and only a few hundred holdings were bought under the Act. For tenants in Ulster, the Act was seen as fulfilling all of their demands and they immediately used the Act to adjust rents. Although after a few years' experience of the Act land agitation resurfaced to a limited extent, the possibility of the Protestant tenants of Ulster uniting with the Catholic tenants in the rest of Ireland, such as had been attempted in the Tenant Right League of the 1850s & in the 1874 Tenant Right convention in Belfast, disappeared. This further separated the Catholics in Ireland & Protestants in Ulster leading to the religious bloodshed later. To the left of the image is text discussing the terrible state of oppression of the Irish by England.."

The image measures approximately 11 1/2 inches high X 16 1/2 inches wide, including text & margins. The image measures approximately 9 inches high X 12 inches wide, The bottom is rough where it was removed from the Harper's volume. There is no damage to the other edges, but the upper right has a damp-stain in the margin. Faults would be covered by the mat if the image was framed. Paper is lightly age toned but not brittle. Overall the piece is Very Good Condition.
