Scarce Late World War II Nazi "Volkssturmkarabiner-98" Last Ditch VK-98 Steyr Bolt Action Rifle This rifle was manufactured and issued in the last months of the war in 1945. Due to the continued allied bombing of the German arms factories, the Steyr plant developed a late war, last ditch 98K type rifle that was termed the VG-98 or Volksgewehr "People's Rifle". The VK-98 is the carbine version. Intended to use the most readily available material left in the factories to produce a suitable service weapon to equip the German people in the last days of the war. These "Volksgewehr" used a combination late production or rejected receivers, machine gun barrels, simplified front blade and fixed rear notch sights, simple internal box magazines without floor plates, and simple stamped trigger guards. Possibly in 7.92 Kurz. The top of the receiver is marked "bnz45", and there is a single "eagle" firing proof on the barrel. Simple board type pistol grip stock with sling swivels and no buttplate. These last resort weapons were rarely brought back by returning GIs as they were often considered unsuitable for war trophies due to their rough and simple construction. Manufacturer: Steyr Model: VG-98 BBL: 18 inch round Stock: hardwood Gauge: 7.92 mm Finish: blue Grips: Serial Number: 6190 Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun Condition: Fine. 85% original blued finish remains with rough machining marks, small dings, light edge wear, and handling marks overall. Bolt number "6190" with "V" on bottom which matched the serial number "6190" on left side of barrel. The sanded, refinished stock is good with small pressure marks and dents, exposed wood knots, and a crack on the left side directly below the receiver ring. Mechanically fine.
