Outstanding Documented One-of-a-Kind U.S. Government Special Ordered .54 Caliber Sharps New Model 1863 Trials Carbine with Factory Letter The factory letter shows that this carbine was invoiced to the U.S. Government on November 5, 1863, as a "Model 1863 Carbine Special" in .54 caliber instead of the standard .52 caliber. It is the only known Sharps specifically ordered in .54 caliber and is arguably the finest Civil War Sharps carbine in existence. In addition to the standard Model 1863 markings and features it is marked on top of the barrel "54/100" in front of the "NEW MODEL 1863" marking behind the rear sight. There is a "JWR" cartouche under the sling ring bar, the inspector mark "E.P.P." on the comb ahead of the buttplate tang, and an "M" on the forearm. The six groove rifling appears to be shallower than the standard; it is possible that Sharps met the .54 caliber requirement by lapping a .52 barrel instead of using a new set of rifling cutters. While Sharps manufactured approximately 65,000 New Model 1863s including 25,000 without the patch box, this is the only known special order .54 caliber Sharps carbine! Manufacturer: Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company Model: New Model 1863 BBL: 22 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 54 Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: 91139 Class: Antique Condition: Excellent with 95% plus of the original blue and 85% plus casehardening colors, some minor fading on the front section of the barrel, and minor handling marks. The highly figured walnut stock and forend are both excellent with crisp cartouche. Mechanically excellent. This is about as near new as a carbine can be, especially one over 150 years old! Needless to say this would be impossible to improve upon. If you want the absolutely best here it is. This is very likely the finest and most unique Civil War Sharps New Model 1863 Trials Carbine in existence, and it is one-of-kind!
