Civil War Sharps New Model 1859 Percussion Carbine This is a very good example of a Civil War Sharps New Model 1859 Carbine with the desirable patch box. Manufactured in 1862, this carbine is fitted with a sling bar and ring, Lawrence folding rear sight graduated to 800 yards and a Lawrence pellet primer. The carbine has a blued barrel and case hardened barrel band receiver, patch box and butt plate. The Ordnance final inspection marks consisting of the script initials "CWH" in a rectangle with rounded ends is stamped on the left side of the stock wrist under the sling bar. "C.W.H." is stamped in small block letters on the base of the sling bar. The Ordnance sub-inspector initials "S.L." are stamped on the left side of the barrel. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "NEW MODEL 1859" between the rear sight and the receiver. The three-line Sharps address is stamped on the barrel between the barrel band and the rear sight. The rear sight base and receiver have the standard Sharps and R.S. Lawrence patent markings. The serial number is stamped on the top of the receiver tang. Manufacturer: Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company Model: 1859-Carbine BBL: 22 inch Stock: walnut Gauge: 52 percussion Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: 48888 Class: Antique Condition: Very good plus. The carbine has a dark age patina on the barrel and receiver. The butt plate and patch box retain generous amounts of the original casehardened finish. The barrel and receiver markings are crisp and the Ordnance final and sub-inspection marks are clear. The stock and forearm have moderate handling wear and remain in fine condition. This is a very good example of the primary carbine issued to the Federal cavalry during the Civil War in original and unaltered condition.
