WPJ Signed Flintlock American Long Rifle This rifle is marked "W'PJ" between the filled rear sight dovetail and the notch rear sight. The rearmost dovetail has a silver colored filler block engraved with what appears to be an unclear name ("Ian Mellor?"). It also has a dovetailed blade front sight and double set triggers. The "JOSH C RANDALL/WARRANTED" marked lock (1847-1861) has floral and bird patterns, a semi-rainproof style pan, and a roller on the frizzen spring. The barrel initials could be that of William Johnson (Lancaster, Pennsylvania, 1830s-1840s and/or Philadelphia, late 1840s). The patch box has crosshatch, dash, and floral engraving. The stock has a Roman nose profile and is finished to resemble curly maple. The wrist has a German silver thumb plate, and the left side has a cheek rest. It is on the front piece of "Illustrated Catalogue of Pistols, Guns and Swords, Antique and Historic, The Collections of Mr. George M. Potter of Allendale, N.J. and Mr. George Steel of Brooklyn N. Y." by The Walpole Galleries from September 1921 and is listed on page 3 as item 21. The barrel and lock markings are noted. The rifle appears to be in the same state as pictured suggesting any alterations are from the period of use, and it was likely relined to the current caliber for target shooting in the late 19th century. Manufacturer: Kentucky Model: Flintlock BBL: 36 1/2 inch octagon Stock: hardwood Gauge: 39 Finish: brown Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Fair. The relined barrel has a dark brown patina, moderate flash pitting at the vent, and scattered minor scratches. The lock has a mixed gray and brown patina and mild pitting. The refurbished stock is good with distinct applied flame striping throughout, surface scratches, and some hairline cracks along the forend. The barrel channel has been bedded with epoxy, and the lock inlet has dark material. The lock and set triggers function fine.
