Signed American Flintlock Long Rifle This rifle has a Bedford School style patch box finial and stock architecture and a German silver inlay similar to those seen in "Chapter 12: The Bedford School" in "The Kentucky Rifle" by Lindsay. The top of the barrel is lightly signed "R.Mack". Note that this rifle does not have the tear drop flat extensions under the wrist inlay, carving, the eagle cheek rest inlay, or the pierced patch box side plates. Instead, the stock is relatively plain (common on late period rifles) and has an engraved floral motif inlaid into the shallow cheek rest. The wrist has a rectangular inlay inscribed "AH," and additional ovoid inlays with engraved borders are seen along the forend. The side plate is similarly shaped to known Bedford rifles and has a single lock screw more commonly found on southern rifles and later percussion rifles. The lock is marked "JOSEPH GOLCHER" and has the typical scroll designs. The rifle also has standard Kentucky rifle blade and notch sights, a fish design on the ramrod entry pipe finial, and double set triggers. Manufacturer: Kentucky Model: Flintlock BBL: 37 3/8 inch octagon Stock: walnut Gauge: 52 Finish: brown Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Fair as refinished and converted to flintlock. The barrel is mostly an artificial dark brown and has some flash pitting, vice marks, and edge wear. The lock is a similar dark brown and has a somewhat ill matching cock. The brass and German silver fittings have aged patinas. The stock has glossy refinished varnish, repairs by the lock nose, a crack at the lock screw on the left, a sliver replaced on the left side at the forend cap, and some scratches and dings throughout. The lock and set triggers function so long as the set trigger is set first.
