Sharps New Model 1863 Cartridge Conversion Saddle Ring Carbine This carbine was originally a standard New Model 1863 percussion carbine used in the Civil War and was refurbished and converted by Sharps for the U.S. military early in the Reconstruction Era. Many of these carbines saw significant use in the historical battles of the Civil War and the Indian Wars in the West. It fires the .50-70 centerfire cartridge and is one of approximately 27,000 with barrels with relined three-groove rifling. This variation is sometimes referred to as the Model 1868. It has the standard New Model 1863 sights and markings, a new stock fitted during the conversion/refurbishment process with a cartouche on the left under the saddle ring bar and "DFC" cartouche on the left side of the butt, and the original buttplate cut for a patch box. Manufacturer: Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company Model: New Model 1863 BBL: 22 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 50-70 U.S. Govt Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: 77199 Class: Antique Condition: Very good plus with patches of original case colors, mostly gray and brown patina, mild marks and scratches, minimal pitting, and crisp markings. The fine wood has a nice dark oiled finish, some slight chips and dents, light scratches, and legible cartouches lever latch loose. Mechanically excellent. This is a very attractive Sharps carbine that has been well cared for but also likely saw some use by the U.S. Cavalry in the Civil War and Indian Wars.
