Very Fine Sharps New Model 1863 Cartridge Conversion Carbine Many Sharps started their life as percussion arms carried by cavalrymen, survived the devastation of the Civil War, and saw use well into the late 19th century and even early 20th century during the settlement of the West and the related Indian Wars. This carbine was manufactured in 1863-1865 as a percussion carbine for use in the Civil War and was one of 31,098 Sharps carbines and 1,086 rifles converted and refurbished by Sharps for the U.S. government to fire the new .50-70 cartridge in the late 1860s. This example has the 3 grooved lined barrel, Lawrence patented folding ladder rear sight graduated to 800 yards and "NEW MODEL 1863" barrel marking (traces only). There are no provisions for a saddle ring bar mount. The stock has a script letter "EF" cartouche on the left side of the wrist, small inspector initials near the buttplate tang and a David F. Clark cartouche on the left side of the buttstock. A patch box is featured on the right side of the buttstock. When these carbines were converted, they were refinished as needed and many had their stocks replaced and thus do not have the original patch box. The barrel is blue, and the remaining surfaces are casehardened including the patch box. Manufacturer: Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company Model: New Model 1863 BBL: 22 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 50-70 U.S. Govt Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: 43847 Class: Antique Condition: Very fine. The carbine appears to be largely unused since it was converted by Sharps and re-accepted by the U.S. government. The barrel retains 98% of the refurbished blue finish with loss around the front sight. The remaining surfaces retain 98% of the vivid case colors. The wood is excellent showing some very scattered minor pressure dents and scratches. The cartouches are clear. Mechanically excellent. A solid example of a Sharps New Model 1863 cartridge conversion carbine that would make for a nice addition to an Indian Wars related collection.
