Exceptional Civil War Ball Repeating Carbine Manufactured by Lamson & Co. of Windsor, Vermont, between 1864 and 1865. A total of 1,002 of these carbines were delivered to the U.S. government in May 1865, and although the weapon does not appear to have seen actual service, collectors have considered the Ball carbine a Civil War weapon. The left side of the frame has the Lamson and Balls marking ahead of the sling bar mount. The two leaf rear sight with sight notches marked "1," "4" and "6." Most of the components have single letter inspection marks. The Ordnance sub-inspector's block initials "GGS" are stamped on the stock comb ahead of the buttplate and on the underside of the forearm. The barrel is brown, and the remaining surfaces are casehardened. Mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock. The carbine has a bore rod. Manufacturer: E.G. Lamson & Co. The barrel retains 98% original brown finish. The remaining surfaces retain 99% plus vivid original case colors. A protective coat of varnish as been applied to the metal surfaces. The wood is also excellent with some scattered minor pressure dents. The right side of the buttstock shows evidence of once having an attached plaque. The cartouche is crisp. Mechanically excellent. An excellent addition to the most sophisticated Civil War collection.
