Roman Philosopher Date: 2nd – 3rd Century CE Height: 38 cm Material: Marble This marble sculpture consists of the head and a partially preserved neck, and is presumed to represent a philosopher. During the early Hellenistic and Roman Imperial periods, such portrait types were commonly used to depict philosophers, poets, playwrights, and orators. The idealized features, deep-set eyes, and expression are characteristic of portraits meant to convey wisdom, contemplation, and intellectual authority rather than an exact likeness of an individual. Philosophers were highly revered in Roman society. The worn surface and missing sections suggest age and burial, but the carving of the hair, beard, and facial planes still reflects the skilled craftsmanship typical of 2nd to 3rd century Roman marble work.
