Relief Carved Pennsylvania Style Flintlock American Long Rifle This rifle is unsigned but has clear eastern Pennsylvania influence in its patch box and some of the carving. Note the similarities with the rifles in "The Bedford School" chapter in "The Kentucky Rifle" by Lindsay and also the lack of a severe drop in the butt. There are also distinct similarities with the unsigned Frederick Sell rifle on page 420 of "Thoughts on the Kentucky Rifle in Its Golden Age" by Kindig. However, the carving on the left side of the stock and the stock flats are shaped different, and there are no inlays in the wood. The sights are the typical low profile blade and notch style. The lock has simple engraving patterns. The brass fittings have some attractive, folksy engraving. Manufacturer: Kentucky Model: Flintlock BBL: 41 1/8 inch octagon Stock: maple Gauge: 50 Finish: brown Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Good as reconverted to flintlock. The iron has dark brown patina, some minor oxidation, and moderate flash pitting. There are some artificially browned vice marks visible on the barrel near the breech section and some bright rub wear from contact with the frizzen. The brass has been cleaned back to fairly bright and has crisp patterns. Two of the wedge "staples" are absent from the bottom of the barrel, and the two that remain are darker than the surrounding metal on the barrel. The refinished stock has attractive carving and golden brown tones, some slight flame figure, a seven inch section at the front of the forend repaired, some chipping and minor slivers absent along the barrel channel, and some chipping at the breech. The lock needs some fitting work.
