Flintlock Fusil Signed J. P. Beck This example is signed "JxPx Becøk" on top between the rifle style rear sight and the breech. The "ø" between the "c" and "k" have been seen on other Beck rifles. John Philip Beck (c. 1751-1811) was active in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, and is known to have manufactured a wide variety of firearms, including muskets for the Committee of Safety during the American Revolution and fine rifles. The Kentucky Rifle Foundation calls him "one of the superior builders of Pennsylvania long rifles" and notes, "He was instrumental in establishing the regional style, and his rifles are often embellished with bold rococo scrollwork and beautiful engraving." This relatively plain piece has blade and notch sights, a basic band at the transition from octagon to round on the barrel, Rococo style scroll carving at the barrel tang, a plain trigger, plain side plate, and a full length stock with some flame figure on the butt. The underside of the lock is marked "ISB." Smoothbores with rifle sights are true utilitarian pieces suitable for hunting various game and defense using different loads and were faster to reload than rifles. Manufacturer: Kentucky Model: Flintlock BBL: 42 3/8 inch part octagon Stock: maple Gauge: 52 Finish: brown Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Fair as restored to flintlock. The barrel has dark brown patina, light pitting and spotting, scattered minor marks, and mild flash pitting. The lock has rough textured, dark brown patina and functions very well. The brass has aged patina. The stock has been refinished and has multiple well-executed repairs, some light scratches and marks throughout, chipping at the toe, and a smooth oiled finish with dark tone. The markings are both fairly clear.
