Philadelphia: H.C. Carey & I. Lea/New York: H.I. MeGarey, (ca. 1826). Hand-colored aquatint with engraving, by I. Hill after a painting by T(homas). Doughty. Small loss to bottom right corner; chipping along top edge; scattered repaired closed tears along edges; sheet toned with foxing. 19 x 26 in. (483 x 660 mm). In mat and in frame. A rare and early view of the Fairmount Water Works. "The buildings and dam of the Fairmount Water Works were completed in 1822 as a means of supplying pure Schuylkill River water to the city...The Water Works was to become the most popular subject in Philadelphia engraved views. Doughty, who was later to receive wide recognition both in the United States and abroad, was attracted to the improvements on the Schuylkill. He exhibited views of them in the 1822 and 1824 Academy of Fine Arts annual shows." (Snyder)

According to RBH, this is only the second copy to come to auction since the Snider copy in 2008.
This lot is located in Philadelphia.
