Philadelphia: Published by William Smith, (ca. 1850s-60s). Later state. Hand-colored aquatint, by J. Hill after S. Jones and I.L. Krimmell. 27 3/4 x 24 in. (705 x 610 mm). Laid down on foam-core; mat burn; scattered soiling along margins, some remnants of old tape along same. In mat and in frame. Deak, 309; Snyder, Mirror of America 510

The burning of the Masonic Hall, a gothic and marble structure designed by William Strickland and built during 1809-1810 on Philadelphia’s Chestnut Street above Seventh, burned
in 1819. "The fire shown in this aquatint destroyed only the tower and part of the interior; the building continued to be used until 1853, when it was demolished to make way for a new Masonic Hall." (Deak)
