Desirable Factory Panel Scene Engraved Marlin No. 32 Standard 1875 Spur Trigger Revolver with Rare DeGress Patent Grips and Documentation Around 19,500 No. 32 Standard 1875 revolvers were manufactured by Marlin between 1875 to 1887. This example has the standard markings and features and is also factory engraved on 75% of the metal surfaces. The engraving mostly consists of scrollwork and wavy lines, but there is also an unusual panel scene of a light house or watch tower and a castle with a mountainous background on the right side of the frame. It is fitted with "Lady Pattern" DeGress grips with a woman playing a tambourine on the right grip, leafy scroll designs throughout, and the patent information on the left side. Francis DeGress of Bloomfield, New Jersey, patented his method for molded copper "pistol handles" treated with acid and then gilded with silver in 1874. Examples of his molded grips have been seen on revolvers of multiple manufacturers and are highly sought out by collectors. This example includes copies of documents that indicate it was acquired by well-known collector Dr. Robert G. Cox from Elmer M. Diederick in 1979. Manufacturer: Marlin Firearms Co Model: No.32 Standard 1875 BBL: 3 inch solid rib Stock: Gauge: 32 RF Finish: nickel Grips: DeGress Serial Number: 7079 Class: Antique Condition: Fine. The revolver retains 25% of nickel plating on the barrel, more than 50% original nickel on the cylinder, 75% plus original nickel on the frame, and 98% plus of the silver plating on the grips. There is an aged patina on the exposed brass, gray and brown patina and some oxidation on the exposed steel, some light pitting, a series of strike marks on the butt, and minor scratches and marks throughout. The action functions fine, and the markings and engraving patterns are distinct. According to Marlin expert and author William Brophy, "the DeGress grips are desirable and a pistol fitted with them belongs in every serious Marlin collector's collection."
