U.S. Smith & Wesson Second Model Schofield Revolver with Factory Letter Only 5,934 Second Model Schofield revolvers (of which 5,285 were sold to the Army) were manufactured in 1876 and 1877. The Schofield revolvers were arguably some of the best revolvers of the period, but the U.S. Ordnance Department favored Colt's slower loading solid frame design. The left side of the barrel lug is marked with the two line address/patent dates flanked by Maltese crosses. The right side is marked with the one line Schofield's patent date flanked by Maltese crosses, and there are small single letter inspection marks on some of the parts. The serial number is marked on the butt, and the inside of the right grip panel is stamped "4303" (the writer believes this was an error at the factory by simply turning the first two numbers around). The butt is crudely marked with a punch dot "MK". Standard pinned blade front and latch notch rear sights, blue finish and fitted with smooth walnut grips. The accompanying factory letter verifies the barrel length, caliber, blue finish, walnut grips and that it was in a shipment of 3,000 shipped to the National Armory in Springfield, Mass. on October 12, 1876. The Schofields were removed from military service by at the end of the decade and made their way onto the commercial market. Many were altered or updated by retailers to fit their customers' tastes. Many were used by lawmen, express agents, outlaws, and pioneers in the Old West. Frank James, Jesse James, and Cole Younger are all reputed to have used Schofields at one time. Interestingly, George Schofield reportedly killed himself with a revolver of his own design. Manufacturer: Smith & Wesson Model: Schofield BBL: 7 inch solid rib Stock: Gauge: 45 Schofield Finish: blue Grips: walnut Serial Number: 3403 Class: Antique Condition: Good. The metal surfaces have a smooth mottled gray and brown patina. The latch assembly and trigger retain most of the bright original niter blue finish. The grips are also very good having taken on a dark brown color and show some minor dents and dings. The "U.S." marking has been removed from the butt, but the remaining markings are clear. The action is fine.
